We woke up this morning to several inches of snow and a cloud-filled sky promising more to come. This kind of weather calls for some serious comfort food. That’s what we’re talking about this week on The Kitchn, and we have plenty of soul-satisfying recipes and ideas for keeping warm to share. What’s your favorite comfort food?
For us, nothing hits the spot on a cold day better than a good stew. Chili, beef and barley, minestrone - you name it, we’ll make it. We love puttering around the kitchen as the sunlight starts to fade and then letting the soup bubble quietly on the back burner for a few hours. Anticipating that first bowl is half the ritual.
Any recipe that fills the house with the smells of good food is comfort food in our minds:
• Beef and Barley Stew
• Chili Con Carne
• Chicken Divan Casserole
• Lasagne
• Macaroni and Cheese
What about you? Is there a particular dish that you crave more than any others this time of year?

Red-and-Pink-Stripe...

Roasted chicken with root veg! Cozy.
Beef stew, pasta with a hearty meat sauce, or an earthy mushroom risotto. Hard to choose just one and I'm sure I'm missing a few.
Butternut squash risotto, or "squasharoni" -- butternut squash baked mac & cheese.
Mine are mostly carb- and cream-based:
extra creamy homemade macaroni and cheese,
homemade chicken and vegetable soup,
fresh bread with salted butter,
cream biscuits (dorie's) with honey butter,
my aunt Karen's twice-baked mashed potatoes,
green onion and potato soup,
chili with cornbread,
scrambled eggs (with extra stuff like ham or green onions or green beans or cheese added) with pb and jam english muffins,
and pretty much any kind of moist, dense cake, preferably without frosting.
Oh! And pancakes. From scratch (joy of cooking). With pure maple syrup. And applesauce. *nom*
Oh, was I supposed to choose just one? Lol...
Oh! And rice pudding. Forgot that one. Made with raisins, a cinnamon stick, arborio rice, brown sugar, and LOTS of milk. So good. Dang, this is making me hungry!
I love almost any soup with good crusty bread when it's cold out and also veg chili is nice, too.
Slow roasted pot roast with some fresh hot bread. Feel warmer just thinking about it.
Chili.
(The hearty kind with beans. Yeah, I went there).
I really crave Indian food once it starts getting cold. That aside I am with Vintagejenta Carbs, Cream and, for me, cheese based foods.
Lamb stew, preferably with North African spices.
Mashed potato. Just with butter or some leftover gravy.
Homemade chicken and dumplings. Nobody makes it like I do, so I always have to make my own. The end is always worth the work!
French onion soup for the win. Or maybe fondue.
Mine has gotta be Gourmet's braised beef short ribs with dijon mustard. Hands down, the best braise/stew ever. And no carrots or celery involved!
Cheese, potato and carrot soup from the Laurel's Kitchen cookbook. To die for, and I don't even live in a cold climate.
Kimchi jigae (kimchi soup) is warm and satisfyingly spicy.. yum.
Veggie soups and stews -- particularly spicy ones -- polenta, root vegetables.
Braised short ribs. Split pea soup. Lasagna. Beef Bourginon. Ina Garten's Chicken Bouillabaise.
Hm, I think mine is definitely chili. My husband's recipe is my favorite.
I also love beef stews. Or a pot of beans.
And finally, my mom's chicken and dumplings!
I really love to make soups in the winter. The best ones are always the ones I make when I'm not sure what I'm doing and I just throw stuff in. I recently did one that was so good, I can't wait to make it again. It had sauteed onions, carrots, celery, mushrooms, chick peas and butternut squash. I flavored the broth (I just used boxed chicken stock but you could really go all out and use homemade) with salt, coriander, dried cilantro, cumin and bay leaf. I simmered it for a couple hours and by the time we ate it, the squash had infused the broth with its sweetness, but the spices balanced the sweetness out. It was spectacular!
I think I just found a new one. Beef curry udon. YUM I'll be making that again.
SOUPS! Lately, I've found myself eating soup breakfast, lunch and dinner! It's so comforting and warm. I love holding a hot bowl of yumminess.
The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a constant indulgence; it isn't until Ordinary Time returns in January when winter really signals its presence for me and I recover from holiday excess with oden. Oden, sauerkraut and sausages and creamy soups all spell winter comfort to me.
