Q: What's the deal with Cara Cara oranges? I've seen them pop up everywhere and in a lot of magazine recipes. How should I use them?

Editor: Mabel, Cara Cara oranges are a type of navel orange that are low in acid, so they taste sweeter than most other varieties. Here's more info and a recipe for an orange curd made with Cara Caras:

You should them, they're wicked good.
That should have said EAT them!
I love this citrus salad from Smitten Kitchen: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2010/01/mixed-citrus-salad-with-feta-and-mint
I eat them straight up- they are delicious as is!
I think they would be good in the dressing for this roasted butternut squash and brussels sprouts quinoa salad (instead of clementines).

Also, just eat 'em straight, like you would an orange. SO good.
Try one...they are only available for a few months.

Use the cara cara in place of either tangerine or orange juice!
Eat them, they are yummy. Also the lovely pink color makes me smile every time I open one up. I like them supremed with a handful of dried cranberries sprinkled on top. It's like eating a bowl of jewels for breakfast.
My name is Cara, so I always found Cara Cara oranges to be superior to all others based on name alone! But seriously, they are tasty!
My favorite time of year, Cara Cara season.
Cara Cara oranges are aweomse - A) because they're pink and B) they are super super sweet! I find them at Trader Joes in big bags. Great price too!

I find it interesting that they are apparently lower in acid than navel oranges, because to me, cara caras have much more tang and zing than the navels, which actually taste rather bland to me....
huh. i feel the opposite as most others here - i think they're rather bland compared to standard navel oranges and/or clementines.
I love them and I find them to be both sweeter and yet (like diedl84 said) more orange zingy than regular navel oranges. I also use them as an orange juice and orange peel garnish substitute in cocktails.
Another Cara here - I'm so nice, they named me twice! Love cara caras, and I'm with the others - I eat them straight up. They have such a short time span that they're available for that I don't get tired of them.

Yay for Cara's! *also Cara*
I ate one for the first time a few days ago given to me by a co worker who said they did not like them reminded them of a grapefruit .. But I really like it very good and sweet
My daughter's name is Cara-Li so we love them because of that. And because of their beautiful color!
