Happy weekend, everyone! What are your cooking plans? Is the weather cooling off? Is it time for soup yet? We enjoyed Sandwich Week enormously (we hope you did too) and next week we'll be back to good fall cooking and stocking the freezer for the busy month ahead. Is that in your plans this weekend? Have something delicious planned? Happy weekend, and tell us: What's cooking in your kitchen?

Red-and-Pink-Stripe...

I'm finishing up leftover veggie burgers with sriracha mayo tonight, defrosting some leftover sage biscuits tomorrow from the freezer for breakfast, and thinking about some red wine spaghetti with broccoli rabe or more spicy crab pasta for dinner tomorrow. I might make some of my favorite chocolate chip cookies on Sunday if I feel ambitious!!
I just got my wisdom teeth taken out, so I'm drinking fruit smoothies and eating lots of soup. I've got a pot of vegetable soup (carrot, celery, tomato, onion, and broccoli stem) cooking on the stove now. The softer, the better!
Wow, after seeing that chicken fajitas photo I might have to put that on the list for the weekend! Great way to use some of the end-of-season peppers from the farmer's market, plus use the grill. Also planning to make a crumble/crisp, or maybe clafouti, using market peaches. And roast up tomatoes to make a huge batch of sauce, some for a pizza this weekend, the rest to freeze.
At the other end of the spectrum, I've got several hunks of cheeses that need to be used up, and the cooler weather is starting to make me crave comfort foods like mac & cheese... : )
Oh, and I took some short ribs out of the freezer earlier with plans to braise this weekend. But now rethinking, given all my other ideas above...
A simple pizza (fresh tomato sauce, a bit of pancetta, and pecorino cheese, following a Jim Lahey recipe) and a big salad is going to be dinner tonight.
The plan right now (assuming the husband and I both recover from the cold we seem to have picked up) is to clear some space in our (tiny) freezer, and then fill it back up with a batch of chili and/or beef empanadas. Freezer-clearing will involve making a simple, comforting vegetable soup with the blocks of frozen tofu and homemade stock that are currently lurking there, flavoured with five-spice powder, ginger and garlic; I'll probably serve that on Sunday, when the temperature's supposed to drop into the low teens. I'm also thinking about doing either a quinoa porridge or whole grain crepes with apple compote for a tasty brunch.
I'm making -- again! -- the milkiest chocolate ice cream in the world from "Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home," so I can bring it to my best friend's tomorrow night. MMMmmm.
Seattle is cooling down after a long stretch of sunshine, and tonight I was reminded of the upside of saying goodbye to summer as I ate my favorite kale salad with apples and gorgonzola. Soon I'll be warming up the house baking pizzas and simmering pots of soup, but in the meanwhile I'm going to squeeze in as many perfect tomato sandwiches as I can!
Just about make some chocolate and dried cherry biscotti and homemade focaccia with herbs de Provence!
I made a pot of kohlrabi soup (don't knock it til you've tried it--very creamy & delicate), celery root remoulade, and now I have a pork butt braising. Thank goodness for cool days!
It was my youngest daughter's birthday party this weekend, so I made a triceratops cake, and served nuggets and veggies. Everything had to be from a box so all the parents could verify ingredients for allergies, so it was not stressful and not perfect.
Sunday I hope to be able to bake apple pies with my visiting sister in law. I miss her so much most of the time and we can't wait to get into the kitchen together!
My partner made a pear clafoutis this morning, and I prepared caufliflower gratin and celeriac remoulade (both recipes from Jacques Pepin and Julia Child), and simmered chicken broth from last night's bird.
Spicy eggplant dip for lunch then eggplant curry for dinner. I'll feed the freezer some breaded eggplant rounds as well. Then cross my fingers that the garden tomatoes ripen before the frost!
I've got soup on the stove! I'm also going to make some spinach bites for an appetizer and of course a load of Jim Lahey's no knead bread! Susan
Still grillin weather here. Pork chops + a roast on the grill netted dinner Fri and some easy scrumptious wraps for game day Saturday evening after a long day of yard work. A recent 'cold front' resulting in highs ONLY in the mid 80's was a relief & has had us mentally planning on adding some comfort food to the summer fruits & veggies already in the freezer. Forecast says it's dropping to 49 tonight (not sure I even remember what that feels like!) so dh has become a chili-making fool today. I'm not allowed in the kitchen while he's creating his masterpiece so I've got a day off. Works for me:)
