Happy long weekend, everybody! It's Labor Day weekend — got plans? We're thinking of Latin American food, still — pupusas, braised chicken, salsa, and corn tortillas. And I know I'll have a glass of this delicious rum punch in my hand come 5:00 today! What about you? Tell us what your plans are this fine holiday weekend! What's cooking in your kitchen? We're taking the whole weekend off, but still tune in over the weekend for an extra recipe or two!

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

Yum! I can't wait to make pupusas! Thank you for sharing that link.
As for my weekend plans, my mom just dropped off about 3 lbs of plums, so I'll be making Julia Child's Plum Cakes with fresh whipped cream and a plum crumble for the famly's bbq.

We're going to the beach, so I did all of my cooking today. Haupia, potato salad, salsa, and other random stuff to go with what our friends bring. Tonight, I'm trying that pupusa recipe.
I mentioned my plans to make a pork shoulder roast with plum sauce and lemon-basil eggplant pickles in the post on kitchen projects for the long weekend. But because of a camping trip last weekend and a work-related activity next, I've really been itching to cook, so tonight I grilled some chicken thighs marinated in harissa and lemon juice and served them with grilled sweet potatoes and a green bean salad. (According to my husband, the sweet potatoes were definitely the star.) I'm also going to stir-fry some of the pork roast with napa cabbage and shiitake mushrooms to make an entirely inauthentic, but hopefully tasty, dish to eat with Mandarin pancakes a la mu shu pork.
I may also make some cookies (rosemary sables?). Just in case I haven't gotten ambitious enough already!
I'm gonna have to whip up a second batch of some new granola bars I just tried because they were to die for and we've already almost finished the entire 8 x 13 pan. Even though I made them on Wednesday. And did I mention there are only two adults, a toddler and a 10 month old in our house?? Oops... at least they were super healthy!!
Stuck home alone for the holiday, otherwise I'd be grillin...something. Lots of, um, unfinished household projects on my schedule. Haven't given much thought to what's cookin. Just checked the fridge & found a pre-packaged bag of turnip greens (?) Out of season & not something I'd normally buy as I prefer them fresh, straight from the garden. One of my rare spontaneous purchases for the dh who is stranded on an extended business trip.Off to search for turnip recipes that will stand alone. Wish me luck.
@discerning : I ate turnips greens in italy a long time ago, they use it in the pasta with cream & bacon for instance. You have to boiled them first though.
Just a regular weekend here, but a good one because I'm having guests, and guests = mouths to feed = good excuse to try some recipes ! All from Joyofbaking.com : rocky road brownies, chocolate marble bread, orange & dates muffins and eggs&ham pie... maybe some scones. Sunday brunch should be nice...
Not planning much...just got back from a 2 month holiday in Italy! Need to stock up the pantry and cook some food to put in the freezer. I love wraps but never thought to make them with rice and beans. I'm definitely going to try them out! Thanks for posting ;-)

I started the weekend by making a batch of spiced pumpkin waffles. Tonight, probably grilled chicken in a buffalo marinade with greens and blue cheese dressing; tomorrow, grilled vegetable sandwiches with aioli and sweet potato fries. Monday's my birthday and I'm not cooking :)
I'm starting the weekend with some leftovers of this grilled corn and tomato linguine and then I'm making some raspberry blueberry muffins for breakfast. I'm a little tired of burgers and hotdogs, so I think we might switch it up with lamb burgers with yogurt sauce or maybe more fish tacos. I need to bake something to bring to a BBQ, so I'm thinking lemon bars or key lime pie.
I've having a supper party to celebrate a simply awful flatmate leaving! Mussels in cream and garlic white wine. A vegarian stew with marrow, tomato, chickpeas and butter beans, home made bread made by a guest and followed by pears stewed in berries and red wine.
Stocking up for the back-to-school whirl that is about to hit--very boring from a cooking perspective. But the corn is so good I keep buying too much of it at the farmers market--corn pancakes are definitely on the weekend list, and I can't wait.
As for turnip greens, they're surprisingly good in stir fry!
Whole Foods had a deal on lobster tails today, so think I'll grill those this weekend. Also have a nice piece of halibut to throw on the grill with a bunch of veggies. But the big meal for some friends coming over will be a Burgundy mustard marinated pork roast. Saw the recipe in Williams Sonoma catalog and it sounded delicious. Also might stew some berries to put over warm pound cake and vanilla ice cream...my favorite quick go-to dessert.
A neighbor gave us a bag of beautiful produce: eggplants, squash, tomatoes, thyme, a single banana pepper. Tonight I'm making squash fritters with thyme, sweet potato fries, and sliced tomato with a drizzle of balsamic. I'll roast the eggplants to make baba ghanoush, and I haven't figured out what I'll do with the pepper.
Grilled sausages and a savory tomato crisp http://chezus.com/2012/08/30/savory-tomato-crisp/
I've done pesto and an heirloom tomato tart so far. Tomorrow I'm making honey ice cream
I once had to separate a dozen eggs, and let them come to room temp first. Mistake!!! The whites needed to be room temp, but separating them using the shell to shell method was a nightmare. I should have separated the cold eggs and then let the whites sit. I wish I'd known this trick then!
@ jardin bleu: thanks for the inspiration. I love turnip greens w/pasta, bacon, etc but been forever since I made it. Made a nice dinner. I hope your long ago Italian meal of turnip greens is not the sum total of your experience with them. If so, you are missing out (or maybe it's just your choice of words that gave me that impression).
@cmcinnyc: Really...I think stir fry is the ONLY way I have never used turnip greens. It's now next up. Thanks.
