Happy weekend, folks! How are you? How's your kitchen? Are you still drying out after the big storm? We hope that you and yours are safe and dry, and that recovery comes quickly to everyone affected by the hurricane. And we hope that everyone has a cozy place to cook this weekend, as fall has blustered in, sharp and cold. What's cooking in your kitchen this weekend? Tell us — we'd love to know.

Martha Concrete Lam...

Even though we're supposed to be hovering around 80 degrees this weekend, I'm making soup. A yellow eye bean soup with a hock or smoked turkey thigh and a lentil soup with sausage and greens. Some for the coming week, some for the freezer and some to share with my brother and dad. I may also bake a pot of beans (black? good mother stallards?) to portion out and freeze for later.
It'll be colder in southern New Jersey, post Hurricane Sandy.
I have three ideas, which depending on time and freezer space may or may not pan out.
-Chili (pork and beef, green/red/yellow peppers, spices)
-Sauerkraut and sausage(s) (I tend to use kielbasa, italian sausage, and bratwurst)
-The cider "donuts" that were posted here recently
Otherwise I know I'll be hitting the nearby Amish Market for some fresh meats and veggies.
spicy pickled green beans using 3 Indian spices - http://abcdsofcooking.blogspot.com/2012/11/spicy-pickled-string-beans-shimi-ka.html
Okay, now I want to make sauerkraut and sausages. Sounds so yummy right now!
Tonight was grilled pork with homemade applesauce and boiled potatoes. Tomorrow, beef and barley stew.
Anything but beef heart.
Latkes and fried eggs. That NPR interview with Deb of Smitten Kitchen made me so hungry.
Good old fashioned pot roast. And candy. Lots of candy.
zuchinni fritters
root veg and red lentil curry
chicken meatball, white bean and escarole soup....
Would love a good recipe for sauerkraut. I've been craving it non-stop lately (and NO, I'm not pregnant!!). My plans for this weekend include comforting shredded beef in the slow cooker, made with cognac and red wine. Yum! http://foodforthoughtlinds.blogspot.ca/2010/08/comforting-shredded-beef.html I'm also going to try a new recipe for a pork roast with some rum (see a theme here at all?).
Whatever it is, it will not be from a can...if I can find fresh food in the neighborhood. I have hope now that the lights are on. It will be nice not to cook in the dark (hooray for gas stoves and matches!). It is COLD, though, and we don't expect heat or hot water for at least a week so, I am turning on the oven! Foccacia? Corn muffins? Roasted vegetables? Anything.
Time for candied ginger, rice pudding, carrot date muffins, pizza dough to freeze for later, paneer for the Saag Paneer, start a batch of apple brandy, and maybe do that beef barley soup mentioned above for the weekly soup. We'll see how much I get to!
I got Naomi Duguid's new book on Burmese cooking out of the library, and I plan to try out a couple of recipes from it tomorrow night - I've been eyeing the golden egg curry, stir-fried Napa cabbage, and chile-garlic sauce. Beyond that, I haven't made any hard and fast plans, but butternut squash soup is tempting. As are pancakes.
Short ribs! I recently bought 11 lbs of them on sale and am working my way through some different ways of cooking them. I did the first batch fairly traditionally with just rosemary and garlic and veggies.. then made a puree out of the leftover pan juices and vegetables. Totally amazing and SIMPLE:

Now I'm thinking something a little more exciting for the 2nd round, maybe Korean BBQ style?
Cinnamon French Toast with Fruit & Turkey Sausage for Brunch on Sunday. Spaghetti Squash with Chicken Basil Sausage and bread for dinner on Sunday. Maybe an Apple & Pear Crisp and some Mulled Cider too.
It is chilly here in NYC! I'm planning on slow cooker black bean soup with chipotles (bon appetit - delicious), lasagna (with homemade pasta), James Beard's English Muffin Bread (delicious when toasted), and coffee fudge ripple ice cream to keep us warm. It's been unsettling here over the past week, and our home remedy is comfort food and volunteering.
Tonight friends are coming over and we're going to do something (SOMETHING!) with the plethora of apples, pumpkins, pears, and cranberries I have right now. I'm thinking pear cranberry crisp, candied cranberries, cranberry apple upside down cake, apple pastries, pumpkin custard, pumpkin bread pudding, and/or whatever else we come up with.
Planning pot roast or beef and vegetable soup for dinner. I also want to bake bread. Badly. I haven't done it in so long. Might have to settle for cream biscuits as I work today.
Sunday and Monday off - we'll see what other delights I come up with! May attempt a scratch yellow cake on Monday for the betrothed's birthday (not until Thursday, but we work). We'll see how far I get...
I'm making a Pawley's Pie (similar to derby pie) that may or may not make it to a family reunion on Sunday and pumpkin spice affogato. If I get to it this weekend, I might even go ahead and make chocolate syrup and salted caramel to have handy.
Planing to cook some chicken with raisins and on top of that pour some mushroom sauce.
Simple and tasty as hell!

Lamb stew with sour dough bread tonight!
Last night; roasted chicken, mashed cauliflower with one sweet potato mashed in for some color (delish) and salad. Tonight, we got home late after attending a funeral, so I sauteed half an onion, added some white wine, threw in chopped leftover chicken and then melted cream cheese for a creamy sauce. I added spinach and had it over orechiette.
I think tomorrow i'll make an apple butter pumpkin pie.
Last night we had maple-mustard glazed salmon, roasted squash and sautéed kale. So good.
Tonight, I'm making creamed spinach, baked potato and grilled ribeye. Should be a real treat as we so rarely have meat. Then a mushroom ragu tomorrow with roasted cauliflower. Gorgeous fall weekend in Chicago.
Best wishes to all the kitchens out east.
We had pizza last night.
Tonight, I made an italian crescent casserole with buttered brussels sprouts on the side.
Tomorrow, I will make a crockpot beef stew for dinners this week. I will also make mexican crockpot stuffed peppers for the hubby's lunches this week. I bought some Brock apples today and want to make some applesauce and possibly an apple pie. I need to also do something with six very ripe bananas.
This weekend? On friday night I made a batch of latkes for just two people... we finally finished the last 5! Delicious :)

Does anyone know where the casserole dish carrying the delicious gratin is from? I've been looking for one like it, with those cool handles. Thanks
