Monterey Pitcher fr...

I'm making chicken parmesan this weekend, because it's my husbands birthday and his favorite dish.
I'm having a big gnocchi party, so we're going to be making lots of sweet potato gnocchi with browned butter and sage along with some classic gnocchi pomodoro. I'm thinking about making some stuffed tomatoes and possibly some lemon bars for dessert. I might make a batch of avocado pesto as well, to use up some avocados I have lying around. It's always great to have when it's going to be a busy week!
I've been wanting to make fish and chips for a while so that will be tonight's menu. I've also been craving a seasonal (read: asparagus and green garlic have arrived at my local farmer's market) pasta or risotto dish so that will be tomorrow's dinner.
Happy Birthday, jess13's husband! & Happy Friday to all. Sorry for those of you in bad weather.
I'm staying home on Sunday and cooking up a big batch of piroshki so I can have some in the freezer. The recipe is from an old friend of my mom's who was born in Russia. (She was also the source of our family's wonton recipe since her family moved from Russia to Hong Kong!)
Also, Happy Birthday to jess13's husband. Tomorrow is my 65th! Since my husband and I cook better than most restaurants in our little town in Washington state, I have requested my Sweetie to make me a down home Texas/Southern dinner that we like! Dipped & fried rock cod (since we can't get catfish), oven fries, cole slaw with a vinaigrette instead of the sloppy mayo, two ingredient vanilla ice cream that I made earlier this week and salted coffee chocolate syrup to pour over the ice cream with a really good champagne for dessert!Happy eating to y'all!
My daughter just got back from New Orleans - an alternative spring break where they built houses down the areas still not recovered from Hurricane Katrina... so she has requested some Gumbo! Never made it before so we shall see how that turns out!
Since winter just won't leave, I'm making a big pot of Rutabaga Apple Soup (http://kaleeats.blogspot.ca/2013/01/rutabaga-apple-soup.html) it's been my favourite all winter and figure one more pot before the snow finally melts. right?
Happy birthday, Scotia48 and Jess13's husband! And congratulations to JosisWales on raising a conscientious daughter! We're cooking Tunesian pumpkin soup and a vegan, gluten-free chocolate cake for my beloved's birthday. Haven't decided what else.
I'm trying my hand at hot cross buns this weekend. Should be fun!
Tonight was marinated beef tenderloin, asparagus, butternut squash-rutabaga purée, and pumpkin pudding with ginger biscuits & whipped cream. (The last of this winter's pumpkin from my freezer!)
Tomorrow, we'll have bison burgers or fish. Haven't decided. And family's coming over for brunch on Sunday. There will definitely be homemade popovers...
Definitely Spring here, everything's in bloom, I finally get to harvest a real crop of asparagus from the garden so will serve those pan sautéed with eggs-over-easy - plus - there are Meyer lemons and lemon verbena for lemonade and poundcake.
Friday Night; Cod Fish Cakes, Roasted Onion Mayo, Saffron Risotto, Roasted Bell Pepper and Sherry Vinegar Sauce, Oven Roasted Asparagus.
Saturday Night; Fresh baked Onion Rolls, Home ground beef burgers, Homemade French Fries.
Sunday Night; Grilled Pork Kabobs with a Piquillo Pepper Romesco sauce, Creamy Orzo Pasta
We're making homemade matzo, of course! http://emmycooks.com/2012/04/06/a-delicious-cracker-homemade-matzo-with-olive-oil/
It's absolutely grim here so winter continues. Last night we ate leftover turkey meatballs with pasta and chunky sauce. Tonight we're going out for pizza but I'll be making orange, oat and cranberry wholemeal scones to munch during the week. Tomorrow night I'm making a chicken, mushroom, cider and mustard casserole to keep us warm through the week. Come on, spring!
I added a coconut lentil soup to the menu to eat for lunch today and through the week - I used 101 cookbooks' recipe.
We're having friends over for veggie lasagne tonight, and maybe I'll make some cherry/oatmeal cookies with these delicious dried cherries I just got....if I don't eat all the cherries first. Also pulled some hatch green chili out of the freezer, not sure what I'm making but I know that's an ingredient.
Supposedly, a snowstorm is forecasted for Sunday. What a great excuse to stay inside and make some mushroom risotto.
Weekends just seem too busy lately to produce anything useful for the rest of the week. I have to re-prioritize!
This weekend, millions of little tea sandwiches for a traditional afternoon tea I do with work friends a couple of times a year. Just once I'd like to make a simnel cake or a coffee & walnut cake, but everyone else loves my sandwiches. They do the baking. Grrrr.
Having said that-- they ARE good sandwiches and nothing tastes better with sandwich than a strong cup of tea! Bacon & egg on whole wheat. Cream cheese, chopped almonds and ginger marmelade on raisin bread. Crusts off, of course!
I'm stealing the mini sandwich idea for a future brunch. Thanks Charlotte! It's one of things that is so obvious I never think of it.
This weekend: zucchini frittata, real homefries, black bean burgers, gumbo. It's bright, but still cold. I still want hearty food.
Well, since it just snowed 7 inches last night in Denver and I need to clean out my veggie drawer, I think I'll make Chicken Soup today. Maybe stock from the carcass. Probably some muffins too.
I made some pomegranate molasses at the end of the week, so we'll be eating things we can dip in that...oven fried potatoes, kofta, kibbeh, croquettes...

As ever, I have to work all weekend (long day tomorrow!) so it will be quick things.
Shoot, I meant to say pomegranate molasses CATSUP! I didn't make the molasses! It was a long day today, too!
I felt a cake coming on and my son wanted "a kitchen job." We made a cardamom walnut cake from Moosewood that is superb. I also thought ahead and made sticky buns for my birthday breakfast coming up this week.
I just went on a cooking bender. I made homemade chicken soup, homemade mac & cheese and a basil and lemon vanilla cake. Half the mac& cheese went into individual servings to be frozen for my son's lunches this week-the other half went into our bellies. The chicken soup will be dinner tomorrow and lunches for me throughout the week and the cake-we'll see how much is left tonight. Tomorrow I need to make banana bread.
We got snowed in today. Well not really snowed in but it snowed here for almost 24 hours so I took advantage and cooked up a storm! We made Smitten Kitchen's pizza dough for dinner tonight. I made spaghetti sauce and froze it for meals after passover. I roasted a bunch of chicken breasts. Half to eat for the week and the other half went into tortilla soup for the week (minus the tortilla's and beans since it's passover)
I just came home on Friday from backpacking through Southeast Asia-- I took a cooking class in Hoi An (Vietnam)-- so the first thing I cooked (after going nuts in an Asian market) once home was grilled chicken breasts (seasoned with fresh turmeric and lime leaves, garlic, onion, sesame oil and fish sauce), brown rice and green mango salad (with onion, mint and Vietnamese mint) and a giant cup of Vietnamese-style coffee.
Today is gonna be bahn xeo (Hoi An pancakes).... chances are in the next week or so I'll be making pad thai, mango with coconut sticky rice (I'm happy to report that The Kitchn's recipe is bang-on!) red curry and/or amok. Got my sushi fix on a layover in Tokyo.
You sound like me...Holly homemaker's prodige, lol! I could spend every weekend in the kitchen ;-)
Friday, I baked bread and rolls, so Friday night's dinner was sandwiches: eggplant subs with red pepper & tomato sauce and parmesan. I also made spinach soufflé and roasted some carrots and potatoes. Saturday, I served penne in a sauce made from leftover red pepper-tomato sauce and bechamel, bound together with an egg yolk and a handful of parmesan, topped with the leftover fried eggplant slices and served with garlic bread.
I also assembled and froze an apple galette with brandy and butter, and a batch of almond cream puffs, both of which will go in Mom's freezer for her next dinner parties. On Sunday I'm going out to Mom's house. In between doing some computer support and some other chores, I'll make dinner from whatever's in the fridge. It works out nicely: she gets a nice surprise and a fancy dinner, and I get a ton of compliments. We call this routine "kitchen roulette."
It was ribs & corn on the grill this evening along with something new. Welcome spring! Hope you all had a great weekend and wonderful birthday celebrations.
We had friends visiting from out of town, so while we mostly ate out, I made a few things to have around the house.

I have been wanting to make Fjita's for a while. Went grocery shopping last Friday and got a piece of flank steak and gave it an attempt. They turned out to be delicious. Brushing the meat with the HP sauce mix made a huge difference in taste (HP steak sauce, olive oil, honey, and lime juice). I served it with tortilla cups filled with black beans and avocados. It was also the first time I cook with tomatillos. They are great!
