What's cooking this weekend? Has the weather changed yet, where you are? Is there just the slightest coolness in the air, or the warm sunlight of early autumn? And what are you cooking? Something autumnal? Or the last batch of popsicles? Tell us, and take a peek at a few posts from the past week that you may have missed.
This week was all about Italian food, and while we barely touched on the breadth and depth of this incredibly rich cuisine, we had a lot of fun eating pasta all week. Here's a look back at a few favorite posts.
• A handful of great kitchen DIY projects for the weekend.
• Making marinara with fresh tomatoes, not canned.
• The love child of kombucha and beer.
• Piece of cake! Where we got all those food-related sayings...
• Our readers' favorite Italian cookbooks.
• Meet your coffee farmer.
• Italy is home to some pretty sleek kitchens.
• Rosh Hashanah began this week, and Ramadan is ending.
• Figs, carpaccio, olive oil, and favorite Italian ingredients.
• Kitchen design from Nate Berkus.
Happy weekend, and see you next week — we're turning from Italian food to Latin American, so let us know what you'd like to cook and what you'd like to discuss!

Fig jam...lots and lots of fig jam!
How about Chilean food next weed? Chile is celebrating their independence day on Sept 18 - all next week is a huge fiesta!
*week!
Mexico's Independence Day (200th!) is Sept. 16th. Something tells me you planned next week just right :) Looking forward to it!
tuna noodle, macaroni and cheese, egyptian tomato soup, veggie stew and banana bread- i'm stocking the fridge for back to school exhaustion.
@STLcolleen: that must have been a couple of bad days for Spain - it's Chile's bicentennial, too! :)
We have an open house, so I can't go too crazy but right now I have French Bread baking in the bread machine and I'm hoping to bake a cheesecake and/or vegan orange carob muffins for the open house. Not sure about meals, though. Probably some simple soups and a stir fry.
Maybe something comforting like stew - it has been so sad to watch the news here (bay area) and also fall is in the air. It's time for heartier stuff (probably this will trigger a heat wave now!)
I am throwing myself a housewarming party! Fire in the hearth on the screen porch, tiki torches for the bocce court, bbq pulled pork on homemade buns, and gingerbread pear cake. Plus potluck stuff from other folks and hot apple cider. And peach/nectarine basil salad.
I am so excited I can't stand it. And the weather should be just chilly enough to justify a fire. First one in the new house. Can't wait!
Definitely changing the menu for fall. It's been a gorgeous few days, with that bit of chill in the air that makes you crave more comforting food. I'll be making spiced carrots, a recipe inspired by Epicurious.com, full of warm flavors like cinnamon and cumin, and serving them with Moroccan-themed Israeli couscous and lamb chops and, of course, a nice glass of spicy red wine.

I spent today freezing the last of the peaches we'll see from our region this year. Tomorrow I'll make jam.

Some kind of egg casserole to take to church Sunday morning.
Cooler temps mean welcome back roast chicken for Sunday, farmer's market for the last of the peaches to freeze for jam, making plum jam, and the baking begins: mega-batch of brownies for teachers.
Just made a panna cotta for tonight's dinner. Also made applesauce to go with it. Probably make some more bread tomorrow.
Five containers of marinated meat are in my fridge: chicken in lemon, chicken in garlic, chicken in I-forget-what, pork in guava juice, and pork in beer. Today's plan is to cook and freeze these items so I have the meat component of future meals.
Meanwhile, I'm going to eat a modified-to-be-healthful German potato salad that I invented on Thursday.
I'm making a batch of Mark Bittman's delicious sweet potato and black bean salad (from the Minimalist column) for lunches next week. I think I'll also whip together some eggplant tomato basil pasta sauce with some late-season produce I got at the farmers' market today. I love preparing for the coming week during the weekend! It makes busy weekday life so much more enjoyable!
I'm running my first half marathon tomorrow morning, so my friend and I are making up a big batch of fresh homemade spaghetti sauce, homemade turkey meatballs for spaghetti and meatballs with salad and garlic bread.
I am making chicken stock this afternoon/evening, freezing it, and then using at least some of it tomorrow to braise some pork shoulder ala Alice Waters with Ancho peppers. The trick (she says) is browning the upper half, then rotating the roast so the lower half browns, then the former upper half soaks in the stock and pepper/onion/herb re-flavors it. Wash, rinse, repeat until it is done. Sounds good.
Duck confit. Using recipe from NY Times.
Grilled cheese sandwiches.
Heirloom tomatoes with balsamic vinegar, green beans in vinaigrette.
Flourless chocolate cake.
... yeah, I think that's enough.
I have just put a sealed plastic bag in the fridge filled with black cod marinating in miso for a dinner party I am preparing in the middle of the week. And I made pain aux nois for a dinner I am going to right now...pam

oops, that's noix. french have a word for everything. I followed the King Arthur recipe but am a little bit worried it hasn't cooked all the way through... that's the hell of making bread for other people. You can't cut into it to check! pam
How about corn chowder and homemade beer bread . . . delish!!!

We gave one last farewell to summer by cooking on the grill all weekend. We first had grilled pizza (with beer dough) topped with basil pesto, prosciutto, and portabellas.
For a cookout with friends, I whipped up a batch of plum thyme iced tea, and then we had roasted Hatch Chiles, avocado, and tomato burgers, grilled corn with chili lime butter, salad, bacon-wrapped shrimp, kabobs, macaroni and cheese, and then to finish it off, a peach strawberry crumble!
It was rainy and cool yesterday, and we had friends who came over to watch the Eagles game...So I went ahead and made my first batch of turkey chili and cornbread. Now I think I'm ready for fall.
