What's cooking this weekend? Do you have lemonade lined up in the fridge? How about some cooking out at the park or on the roof? What's in season, where you are, and what are you cooking with it?
Here's a quick look back, too, at a few posts you may have missed this past week.
• New cookbooks for summer reading, picked by The New York Times.
• Mahlab, a new-to-us spice.
• How to remove the stickiest of jar caps.
• A surprisingly pink kitchen, and a gentleman's gorgeous kitchen from reader patrick (the other one).
• Zebra (bikini? masked bandit?) potatoes!
• Substitutes for cream of chicken soup, plus a raw, homemade sweetener.
• Old-school butchery posters.
• For the weekend: White sangria, and a host of rosé wine recommendations.
• Some excellent suggestions for non-dairy frozen treats...
Have a good weekend!

Where may a girl find a Ball Jar with a tap like the one pictured? So cool!
I would also love to know where to find a Bell Jar with a tap. That is just lovely.
And I am making braised pork ribs this weekend. I am extremely excited to see if they turn out!
I just made a batch of bread and butter pickles -- I guess we'll be having them on some hamburgers this weekend!

you can find vintage ball jars on ebay or flea markets, although recently I spotted them at The Gardener stores (if you're in San Francisco, Bay Area) priced $30-$90.
I just made some delicious Shortbread Lemon Squares for my daughter's school potluck. I'm thinking of making a Chile Relleno Strata as well, but is that easily shareable?
We're hosting a World Cup party tomorrow for about 15 friends with one dish from each country in Group C. Pulled pork with bbq sauce and french fries for the U.S., a ploughman's platter with bread, gherkins, pickled onions, Stilton and apple for England, a carrot-fennel slaw with sun-dried tomatoes and olive dressing for Algeria, and a rolled apple strudel for Slovenia.
I am cooking nothing this weekend that requires turning the oven on as the weather is waaaay too hot. Maybe a few days of salads until it cools off again.
You are spot on with the lemonade! Have been drinking a lot of that homemade lately. And sun tea brewed on our apartment balcony, yum.
My husband and I are going for a hike tomorrow and brining a paleo picnic lunch of chicken salad in lettuce wraps, raw broccoli and carrots, celery and peanut butter, trail mix, apples, and strawberries.
I can't wait to make some jam next week with all of the berries that are on sale!
watermelon is essential. nectarines and peaches too. oh and strawberries, raspberries and perhaps a chocolate pudding made with green coconut.
strawberries just came into season. I do have one more asparagus recipe I want to make so I hope I can get one last pound!
Matar Paneer last night, as requested by the birthday girl, followed by some wonderful hot fudge sauce over ice cream.
Cookies this morning to send along with a youth group trip--I'm thinking maybe some oatmeal scotchies and snickerdoodles.
I have ground turkey and will probably do some burgers on the grill since it's so hot.

What a pretty picture!
I've got a fridge full of fruit--local strawberries, east coast blueberries, California cherries (finally semi-affordable). I think I'll just stuff myself with that all weekend, it's such a treat.
We'll be making Nigella Lawson's beet salad with dill: beautiful, filling, and cool on a hot day.
Also, we'll be preserving about 8 pounds of strawberries, so unfortunately, the air conditioning will be getting a workout this weekend.
I recklessly decided to do the World Cup Food Challenge, so today is avgolemono w/ soba noodles & shrimp (Greece vs. S. Korea), African-influenced empanadas (Argentina vs. Nigeria), and pineapple trifle (U.S. vs. England). I haven't yet thought about the next day's matches.

I threw together a fruit salad for a work picnic today. Just strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and some banana...nothing special. At the last second, I decided it needed a glaze, so I experiemented with a mix of strawberry balsamic vinegar and ginger syrup. Wow. I couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out. It got lots of compliments, and if I do say so myself, it was the best thing I ate all day.
Salmon burgers, sweet potato fries and caesar salad last night; rum glazed shrimp and mango kabobs, cilantro rice and cucumber salad tonight. Early flight to NY tomorrow-hoping for Noodle Bar and Babbo over the next few days.
Grilled some striped sea bass tonight with fresh herbs and lemons, cucumber/arugula/tomato salad from the garden. We've been drinking what I call a <A HREF="http://makearoux.blogspot.com/2009/09/friday-cocktail-26-lillet-blanc.html">"Lillet Blanc Refresher"</A>.
Tomorrow, I'm cooking my stash of Gulf shrimp (wish I could hold on to them forever) in traditional Louisiana bbq style.
Baked our first ever cheesecake for a birthday party yesterday, and it was a success! Well worth all the nursing required. Also made up a batch of ginger-peach iced tea using green tea, agave syrup, and a splash of ginger-infused vodka. Took a batch of potato salad w/ smoked bacon, too.
Eating out in a pub garden with a view today.
I made a strawberry rhubarb pie yesterday that was so good I had to make another today. While hunting down more rhubarb at the farmers market, I found sour cherries, which have been cooked down into a compote. Who knows what I'll do with it all.
Right now a pork roast is cooking in the slow cooker - getting ready for some pulled pork sandwiches with some farmers market pork!
Also tons of vegetables from my CSA share - ready to make salads with kale, sweet onions, arugula and zucchini.
I decided to try a new recipe for turkey burgers. The only one who liked it was the cat.
I made this corn soup. Or something similar to it. I crumbled bacon over the top...oh man was it tasty! http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/foodnation-with-bobby-flay/spicy-corn-soup-recipe/index.html
(I didn't bother with all the pepper business, just used dried chipotle powder.)
I made homemade tonic water last night http://www.jeffreymorgenthaler.com/2008/how-to-make-your-own-tonic-water/ for gin and tonics this weekend, which actually turned out great. I also made a soba noodle salad with a bunch of the greens from our CSA, which I will totally make again. Maybe I'll even make my own soba noodles next time...
One night we made summery sandwiches with turkey, feta, arugula, radishes, and cucumbers on pesto baguettes with strawberries for dessert from our first trip to the farmers market for the summer.
Sunday was rainy and cool, so we made biscuits and a big pot of beef stew!
I got a LOT of strawberries and cherries at the farmer's market this weekend. I made some of the strawberry coulis (linked to a couple days ago) and some strawberry-limeade concentrate (ditto), and was GOING to can some of the cherries but decided not. I also made a tian (a baked dish of rice and sauteed greens) for dinner one night with some plain strawberries and whipped cream.
The weekends are also about making-ahead chilled soups and hearty salads for bag lunches for the week -- I boiled some eggs for the egg salad (one of the eggs I got from the CSA this week was green, and I'm going to leave that one whole and take it to work like that just to confuse people), and also made some quick Sichuan-style cold noodles (I cheated a bit on the sauce -- rather than mixing it up from scratch, I just used a jar of pre-made Thai peanut sauce from the supermarket).
I made a spanakopita with swiss chard from the garden. I also had great plans for a blueberry pie with almond crumble, but it didn't happen. Maybe during the week!
Indian tea sandwiches:
http://abcdsofcooking.blogspot.com/2010/06/indian-tea-sandwiches.html
Well, I am gonna try an Indian dish named "kheer" this weekend. It is a sweet dish and is served as a dessert after meal. I have heard a lot about it and really looking forward to taste it.
