Chocolate chip pancakes. My grandmother's recipe.
Black eyed peas and tamales for New Year's Day. Also a desert of salty butterscotch sauce over rosemary and vanilla baked pears.
NOTHING... big NYE bash cooked up many small bites.
Going to get take out tonight... is that wrong??? Maybe something of a cooked lentil / veggie wonder tomorrow night.
A lovely, easy garlic soup
Hoppin' John-and maybe some sour cream raisin bars.
Trying to make baguettes and I do not have a stand mixer/dough hook or bread machine. I may be done by midnight....
Other than that, homemade chicken and egg noodle soup (with extra garlic).
My mom and I made our own tortillas this morning and ate them with black beans, scrambled eggs, avocado, cheese, salsa, and fresh spinach. We also had "mimosas" with sparkling wine left over from last night. Delicious! This afternoon I made quesadillas with the left over tortillas for lunch.
For today's brunch: eggs baked in cream, bacon, and biscuits with Meyer Lemon marmalade.
I want to start the New Year with a happy belly!
Nettles nettles nettles! Definitely in pasta of some kind. And brussels sprouts.
We also did the lucky new year's meal: hoppin' john, collards, ham, cornbread, and sweet potatoes. Got my step father in law to eat something green and leafy besides spinach so.. my year is off to a good start!
Had end-of-year soba last night. Tonight, went out for pizza with the family (Mellow Mushroom's gourmet white...very tasty, and even better the next day.)
I have this huge backlog of recipes I want to make, so hopefully I can get around to some of them soon. The roundups are just reminding me of more!
I made baked lemon-garlic chicken and roasted sunchokes. Mmm.
Apple Pancakes on Friday night, caramelised pumpkin risotto Saturday night, Sunday night- who knows?
Coq au vin with chanterelles and buttered egg noodles, vegan brownies, wheat free banana date muffins, blackeyed peas with mustard greens and eggs, and a fridge & pantry clearing soup. Starting the new decade focused on health and frugality- a trend I hope to keep up with.
Just saw this posting...Yesterday we had delicious cabbage roulades stuffed with seasoned minced meat, a traditional dish from Transsylvania at my Uncle-in-Law. It's his birthday on January 1st and all family gathers there every year for this lunch. So much fun!
Today my husband let the baby and me sleep in while he had a 'Hot-Chocolate-Party' with the two bigger kids. Lunch will be homemade pizza and a mixed salad (probaly lambs lettuce mushrooms sunflower seed with a walnut-raspberry-balsamico mustard dressing) and Dinner will be Chinese Foundue at my In-Laws.
Other than that plans are not yet made ;)
I'm with nrizzo88 in taking it easy in the kitchen this weekend! Last night I pulled a huge pan of peppery roast beef and gravy for sandwiches out of the freezer. It's a family favorite I'd made when I found a big roast and I served it peaches and a simple salad.
Hoppin John and braised collard greens for dinner last night (I'm superstitous) and pasta tonight. This weekend will also see a no-knead bread rising and baking. Looking forward to the long weekend!
Homemade pizza, hungarian goulash, bean soup (for the freezer) and a roast chicken. Now I'm thinking brussel sprouts, maybe a trip to the farmer's market while the snow is still light. It's time for the hearty winter foods.
I'm going to pretend we don't have six inches of new snow, and cook Rotisserie Leg of Lamb Provencal.
*Yes, I'm in denial.
- Tilapia with with Lime Butter
- Tomato Meat Sauce
- Marinated Flank Steak with veg. stir fry
- Birthday BBQ Pork Ribs
- Birthday Cake
Oh, and this amazing fougasse

Just made French Toast for breakfast (probably the last of the holiday breakfasts) but I made Hoppin' John yesterday, and there are a lot of leftovers, so I'm not sure there will be a lot of other cooking going on this weekend.
I haven't done a big marketing trip since before Christmas, and we're getting walloped with more snow today, so I'm hoping to make do with whatever's in the house.
Today, I'll make bread: a slightly rich, slightly sweet, eggy dough, an egg wash crust scattered with sesame seeds.
Tonight, it's breakfast for dinner: gorgeous eggs from my sister's hens, toast from that lovely bread, homefries (using the last onion in the house; how did I let myself run out of onions?), supremed oranges and grapefruits, which Mom ordered (in flagrant defiance of the Eat Local campaign, but with lots of love) from Florida, toast from that gorgeous bread. I might even make a small batch of cinnamon rolls from some of the dough.
To go with that, I'm trying a tip from my sister: pan-fry pressed planks of tofu in plenty of salt and smoked paprika; she claims it tastes just like bacon. I don't know how much is sounds like bacon, but it sounds good, and my vegetarian partner should love it, too.
Tomorrow: probably black bean soup and beer bread, which has been a staple around here for December.
For the first time, I baked with my daughter (who is just under two years old). We used this banana bread recipe to make muffins: http://www.cookstr.com/recipes/best-banana-bread
Tonight...not sure yet. Very likely leftover mac and cheese.
Last night I made the "Chicken in Milk" with meyer lemons and my CSA garlic. SO GOOD!!! I used raw milk so the curds turned into these lovely globs of like, lemony paneer! It was awesome! I served it w/ mashed parsnips and broccoli.
Making acorn sqash tonight... dont know how yet.
I'm going to be adventurous... I'm going to try my had at Bao... specifically, the Baked Bao with Vegetable and Tofu Bun Filling from Asian Dumplings by Andrea Nguyen. Wish me luck!
Burrda2000: steam them! Bao are so much better and softer steamed. If you've never tried to steam Bao, by all means do. Also, try filling the bao with blueberries and cream cheese or other fruits.
Chicken pot pie...we have cooked chicken leftover, and I'm craving some comfort food. Tomorrow I'm trying to make some tofu from scratch...We'll see if it works.
I've just finished making baking a lemon glazed eggnog loaf, using up some of the eggnog in the fridge. Later, I'm baking a chocolatey banana bread. It's snowing outside, and I feel like filling up the freezer.
Tonight, we're having pan seared steaks and Pioneer Woman's potato bundles along with some sort of veggie.
Tomorrow, more snow, seems like the perfect time for soup-cheesy corn and ham chowder, to be exact. With homemade croutons and a salad. On Monday, we'll have leftover soup.:) YAY!
Happy Weekend!
Potato soup with roasted garlic, thyme and baby bellas! I took inspiration from a post on thekitchn a couple days ago and ran with it- very good!
Linguine with truffles for New Year's eve, chocolate mocha with Frangelico and cream on the couch for today's snow storm and homemade vegetarian pizza tomorrow with mushrooms, red pepper and eggplant.
I cooked a cornish hen tonight, stuffed with carrots and shallots and garlic! I also made a modified version of the petatou recipe from Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles cook book and cooked *fresh* brussel sprouts. Totally yummy!
I made homemade mayonnaise for the first time. It tasted pretty good, but I am apparently not patient enough about adding oil and it was pourable rather than spreadable. Oops.
Creme brûlée French toast casserole, cheesy potato bake, carribean sweet potato hash, citrus salad with mint sugar and pomegranite pips, pull-apart yeast rolls with jam, bacon, faux sausage, and bloody marys. I better get started!
Sometimes I feel like "What's cooking this weekend" is a dog and pony show intended to impress each other with the most extravagant creations. How much actually is made? It seems like a lot of wishful thinking meant to impress but not enough time in our busy lives.
