Happy weekend, folks! I'm just back from an inspiring, invigorating week at this food writers' workshop, and I returned to a new chill in the air and a yearning for soups. I am considering a pot of Asian-inspired beef broth and noodles, or perhaps some old-fashioned chicken stew. And certainly a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread! What about you? Are you experiencing fall weather, or is it still hot where you are? Tell us what's inspiring you and your cooking this weekend, and take a look at a few posts from the past week that you may have missed.

Happy weekend, and happy cooking!

In honor of Chilean Independence Day which is this Sunday, September 18th, my hubby and I made Chilean styled fried doughnuts, sopaipillas. May there be much eating, celebrating, and wine drinking (Chilean wine of course) this weekend!
Feliz dia de la independia a todos!
*independencia (I started drinking too early apparently :)
I'm doing a lot in the kitchen this weekend (I almost never got weekends off!) A crusty bread, braised beans and kale, maple-nut pie, chicken enchiladas, chicken stock, green tomato chutney, chocolate-plum jam, crab apple jelly and roasted garlic and peach chutney. Phew!
I'm trying out a new slow cooker recipe for ropa vieja. That will give me plenty of food for wraps, salads, etc for the week. I'm also going to bake up one of Trader Joe's amazing chocolate croissants and enjoy it with a beautiful pot of Harney and Son's Earl Grey Supreme tea as a luxurious breakfast in bed on Sunday.
Trying my hand at those banana peanut butter cupcakes and the biscuit jammers! These chilly, cloudy days call for lots of baking...
I am just about to place two tins in the owen. One will go to my friends tomorrow, the other one my partner & I will have for breakfast. I cannot wait. Toasted cinnamon bread with butter sounds like a very good idea. :)

My honey and I have both been down with a tummy bug for the last week, so that means I now have two weeks' worth of CSA veg to cook! I'm planning on making roasted veg layered enchiladas from Two Peas and Their Pod, a corn and red pepper salad from Serious Eats, a Greek salad, and some BBQ burgers. I think I'm going to try freezing some chopped green pepper for later, as well. Something needs to happen quick so that I don't lose any of this stuff!
Just made my first pot of soup since early spring. I literally had to dust off my ladle. Vegetable orzo soup and it was a big hit with the kids. Paired it with some great crusty bread from a local bakery. Tomorrow, I plan on making us some pineapple peach smoothies before the school 5k and then I am going to make pancetta and chive bread pudding for dinner.
My new Crockpot will get its second batch of vegetable broth going soon here. I broke the ceramic crock and when I tried to get a replacement, I found out the unit had been recalled two years ago for electrical problems! YIKES! I guess I should check that sort of thing periodically so I don't burn the place down. So that's my PSA.
Other than that, chocolate chip cookies, potato tacos, and I'll let the farmers market make the rest of the decisions.
We want to celebrate one last weekend outside with friends since it's starting to get cold up here in Boston, so we are smoking ribs and chicken! I'm also making a big batch of mac & cheese and a pitcher of sweet tea. Friends will be donating other sides and dessert. I'm also making a prune plum tart this weekend, but I think that will be just for my husband and I. :)
Roasted tomato and corn soup and spicy basil chicken stir fry (with the last of my Thai basil). I'll probably make up a batch of granola tomorrow for some quick breakfasts during the week. In collaboration with a friend, I baked and assembled a three-tier cake for a third friend's bachelorette party - I contributed a lemon cake with blueberry filling and vanilla cake with mango curd.
We had fennel ginger miso soup with peach brie sandwiches last night, plus Leela's figs with cashew cream.
About a month ago, I spent a Sunday in the kitchen making freezer meals. So, tonight, and tomorrow evening, I plan on having chicken pot pie from the freezer. Tomorrow, we will have cheese grits (I'm a Southern girl living in New England) and biscuits for breakfast. I'm making mini quiches for this week's breakfasts and more food from the freezer, lunch wraps with lots of beans and rice and chicken enchiladas. Most of this, I've already made, I just need to bake it! :)
I made the cinnamon raisin bread, posted here, this morning. Easy and so so good. Thank you! It's cool and rainy here today and I've been craving Italian, so I think it's Lasagne tonight.
its been gloomy and cool in SoCal lately, so its time for soup! I got a nice bunch of kale, planning to make some caldo verde. I also want to try making some stuffed lotus root with glutinous rice. it gets boring eating them in soups.
Roasting a local chicken with lemon and garlic, making a potato and squash mash, and enjoying what are looking like the last of the summer tomatoes. Football watching on sunday will be meatball subs and miller lite ;)
I'm low on money until Friday, so seasoned potatoes and ramen with egg and bok choy for me.
Rack of lamb with mustard coating, served with kale or chard. Also, for lunch and dinner though the week i made a chicken pot pie, but instead of a cream base made a tomato base (fresh tomato, rosemary, white wine, butter, thicker). Today if I need to turn the oven on again like I did last night I'll make something sweet with plums.
A batch of baguettes and not much else. I'm eating up the last of the farmers' market produce, but that ain't cooking, just slicing and eating plain. Lots of tomatoes on bread, the occasional slice of melon.
The Fella spend a rare Saturday night off making a surprise dinner for me: an appetizer of bruschetta followed a big salad of romaine, tomatoes, goat cheese, and pan-roasted asparagus, served with a side of fried polenta with sweet chile dipping sauce. Fantastic! (It was especially sweet because the salad and polenta were attempts to recreate two of my favorite dishes from local restaurants --- so thoughtful!)
I tackled a couple of new things in the kitchen yesterday...I made my first slow cooked pork shoulder, and baked my first pie completely from scratch! (blueberry)
The pork turned out amazing, and the pie was just okay. There was too much filling, and it wasn't thick enough...at least it tasted good!
