We're gearing up for fall around here, dreaming up new ideas and recipes. One thing we'd like to do a little more of is food for kids. We've noticed a big response from our readers in the past when we've talked about food for toddlers and tips for cooking with your kids, and of course cooking for little ones can be such an important part of cooking at home! So, if we do more with and for kids at The Kitchn, what would you like to see? This is your chance to tell us what would be most helpful and interesting to you. Recipes? Ideas? Encouragement? Product reviews? Snacks? Healthy desserts? Tips for getting kids, younger and older, into the kitchen? We'd love to hear from you!

As there is already a Family section/channel on Apartment Therapy, wouldn't it make more sense to include or increase food content there, rather than on this property?
I would love to see posts on baby food recipes for those of us who make our own baby food for our little ones. :)
Yea, while the occasional article on school lunches is interesting, I'd rather see no food for kids content on this blog.
I think it would be fun to see a weekly post from young person and/or their parents, along the lines of Martha Payne (NeverSeconds.blogspot.com), the Scottish girl who photographs and rates her lunches. When she's not in school (like during the summer holidays), there are guest bloggers from all around the world, each day posting their meal and rating it. I think it's very honest without resorting to any judgements or indictments. It's also hilarious because one of the criteria (there are only 5) is pieces of hair (eye opening how many times hair shows up in food).
A good way to get kids to think about the food that they eat and how healthy they think it is.
Even as the mom of a 4yr old, I don't think that TheKitchn needs to change a thing. All of your recipes, ideas and other content are easily adaptable to those feeding little ones. I love you just the way you are!
Please don't. Just... just no.
Yes, I'd love the occasional kid-related content. I'm not really talking about silly stuff like ants on a log, but rather clever ideas for bringing up children to love food and cooking as much as we do. Tips on cooking with kids, kid-friendly kitchen projects, healthy kid- (and adult-) friendly snacks, etc.
One thing I'm not totally into is spending an entire week on one thing, like egg week. It becomes exausted. Maybe keeping it to a day? Even 2 would be better.
I guess i wouldn't hate talking about kid friendly foods here and ther but please keep in mind many of us dont have kids. As long as its not too excessive i dont see what the problem would be though.
Agree with all the naysayers. What I love about it is how diverse it is -- I'm a pescetarian so I can't necessarily cook all the recipes, and I wouldn't have interest in, say, gluten-free cooking, but I find all the topics adaptable to my lifestyle. Kid food, on the other hand, has pretty much no relevance to anyone who reads this blog and doesn't have kids.
I have kids, but I'm not into so-called kids recipes either because I want them to eat normal adult food and not "special" kid food. So, no thanks.
Once a week or so is fine, but put me on the side of regular readers who think this should go on the Kids site. Put one of those links between the way you do with AT posts. I just don't think feeding kids should really be that different from feeding anyone else.
Another mom writing to say that I would much prefer to see any additional kids' content on the Family page. The amount that you have here already is plenty. You've already had great posts on making baby food, toddler-friends meals and snacks, what to bring to a new mom, etc. More does not equal better!
So we can do a week on eggs or African food but not kid friendly food? I hate eggs but I'm not turning my nose up to the posts. Chill out yall! And if you look at the Family page its mostly nursery tours and overpriced baby furniture- more than the occasional kid friendly food recipes and ideas would get a snobby response from many there too I'm sure unfortunately :(
I say do it. Since not but one or 2 people actually gave suggestions- I'd say more ideas for fun food ideas (think rainbow pancakes, fun presentation ideas for kids foods, or the hotdogs with spaghetti through it) Stuff that, while not necessarily the most gourmet, can be fun for kids or kids at heart. I don't think focus on healthy specific foods- people who read this site are fairly conscious of that stuff. But product reviews are great, ideas for encouraging children to cook with family is great too. Posts about that in the past typically is a hot topic on here, so it could be nice to focus on it more.
I have a 6-year old, so at this point there really isn't "kid food" going on here (yes, I made my own baby food, and while I'm long past that, no objections to seeing posts on the subject). I kind of like the level things are at now, with kid-focused content just folded in to whatever else is going on. I'm a vegetarian, so I pick and choose here anyway, as I imagine many do. One topic I'd love to see, which is inspired by having kids but applies to grown ups too: how do you deal with cooking for people (often small people) who adore repetition, repetition, repetition.
I am kind of in the middle. I don't have kids and don't plan to anytime soon, but sometimes babysit and don't really know what foods are acceptable (or way to avoid typical "kid-food" like chicken nuggets). I'm also curious about making baby food (for future reference!). I wouldn't mind seeing maybe a post a week relating to kid-foods, but any more (like, a week of kid food) would be so overwhelming!
I'm a parent of little kids. I would not like to see "kid food" as my kids just eat the same things their parents do (and I think this is the case with most food-minded people, like people who read thekitchn.) But, I would like to see ideas about how to cook with kids and how to introduce cooking safely. Perhaps I am biased, but I do think this sort of content belongs on thekitchn. It is at least as much general-interest as gluten-free or vegan. Even if you don't have kids, you might want to teach one to peel a carrot some day.
Agreed with herzsprung and ek76... "kid food" should just be "food."
This, and the continuous child birthday party posts should really go back to the kid site. I don't understand why these were consolidated in the first place. What started as Apartment Therapy and theKitchn have now drifted further into the RealSimple MarthaStewart realm of things.
I think kids' food is fine to have on here for a week, although apparently I am in the minority. I have a 6 year old and like CMCINNYC would like to have some recipes or ideas for dealing with eaters who like the eat the same. thing. all. the. time. Or think that adding something like Italian seasoning can be "too spicy". Ways to not make my cooking turn into short order cooking, but ways that I can easily adjust for plainer palates than my own while cooking.
Seasonal ideas are very important - encourages all of us to eat more seasonally, locally - and it can be a source of creativity to figure out how to work with the fruits and vegetables that are at their best at the time. Not so interested in kids ideas... though simply, delicious and fresh ideas that are easy to throw together for two people leading busy lives are very welcomed.
I'd like to see more editorials. I love the Meditations series and miss the kind of food writing that used to appear in Gourmet. Maybe something like that could find a home here.
Also, I prefer recipes to be housed on site, rather than linked to. There are enough food blogs out there; I'm looking for recipes that are curated and tested by "someone" I trust.
How about ways to talk to kids about food? I've been a nanny for some time, and a lot of finnicky eaters have back stories about WHY they refuse to eat some foods, but have trouble explaining (i.e a girl once wouldn't eat the PB sandwich I made for her. She insisted she did not like peanut butter. So I asked few questions, 'are you allergic?' 'is it the taste or texture?") after a lot of 'no's' to my questions, she was finally able to explain about feeding her dog a pill coated in pb and he spit it out and made her sick at the sight. Some kids aren't picky to be stubborn, they have emotions and reasons attached to food. But if there are articles on how to talk to kids about why they aren't eating, or even why they should eat something (coaxing them into new foods), I think it'd be a great help!
It would be fun to see posts about what chefs/folks in the food industry are cooking with their kids. I always find that eye opening and inspiring.
I've been a faithful reader of thekitchn for years and when I read this post was dismayed. I echo those who think the occasional kid related post is okay, but the direction becomes overall more kid-oriented, I likely won't read it as much. I do love the recipes, themes and historical context.
Please Please do not increase kid content on this site!! It is hard to find good food blogs that do not focus on cooking for kids... there is already too many kid's birthday party ideas ect. on the Kitchen for my taste and I do not want to loose another great cooking blog to children.
I am loving the recent themes on countries and regions... a little more ethnically diverse content would be great! Push us our of our normal routines to use new spices and combinations!
Or perhaps more complicated techniques with a fall twist! There is so much interesting content without becoming a 'mommy' blog ( no offense to mommies... but there are so many mommie blogs)
I enjoy your good work!
Child specific posts don't interest me at all.
Trying to put healthy, quick meals on our tables are what most of us are interested in.
Thanks!
More food content on the kids page would be great. Easy, quick, keeps well, healthy, can be made in advance for lunch boxes. These are the posts I scour the net for. My days of clipping recipes is over, recipes can only be kept if they meet strict requirements. I still buy mags and love my RSfeeds but I know our menu planning is family only for many years to come.
I would love to see recipes for grown-up food done in such a way that kids can make it, either with adult supervision or not. My nine year old daughter has been reading cookbooks for fun since she realized she could read. She's not interested in making the cutesy kids' food. She wants to be able to cook for the entire family.
I don't have kids, but I do have a picky vegetarian boyfriend who sometimes eats like a kid. I'd like to see recipes for family dinners - adult enough to not be classified as kid food, but kid friendly (either as-is or with slight tweaking).
I agree with many posters here --- kids food is just food. Maybe a 'picky eaters' or 'snacks' or 'how to learn to cook this basic' features would be useful for all? I just hate to encourage the 'we make a special dinner for our kids' because they refuse to eat normal nutritious foods mentality. My parents didn't let that fly, and I'm glad. Sure I got to eat the occasional box of kraft mac & cheese (with peas - weird, I know but I love it still) --- but only when they did too.
How about a post on what kids in other countries eat? I live in the UK, and the difference with other European countries in terms of school lunches alone, is huge. It would be quite an eye opener, I think.
I'll agree with everyone else- no more kids parties posts on the Kitchn. Its bad enough on the family page, don't repost it here.
