Q: I am looking for advice on what brand of refrigerator is the most quiet, and thought you or your readers might be able to help. The last fridge we bought was supposed to be quiet, but it's really not. We have to turn it off every time we're in the kitchen.

Editor: We have a seriously noisy refrigerator (it sounds like it's shaking itself apart half the time) so we're not much help here. Readers, do you have tips or recommendations for Dori?

We have a Samsung side-by-side. Quiet, very quiet. Certainly quieter than our previous side-by-side GE.
As a side note, have you vacuumed beneath, behind, and the coils on the fridge? If there is too much dust, it might run rough.
Good luck!
I love the Liebherr we have, and I hadn't realized it but I never hear it!
Our LG French door model is super-quiet. I suppose it's not "silent" but I never notice the noise, other then the occasional crunking of the ice maker.
We have an LG that is quite quiet as well. It is a small model with the freezer on the bottom. I don't notice that it is even on when I am in the kitchen (it is around the corner on the landing of the back stairs, where the original ice box was kept).
We have a Samsung side by side. It is very quiet (except for ice dumps). I recommend it highly.
Those LG refrigerators are great; until they catch on fire!

I went with a KitchenAid Architect Series with the freezer on the bottom and it is super-quiet.
I had a Samsung and it was very quiet - because it didn't work! (Except when the fridge froze the soda cans and they burst all over the inside.) The Maytag repairman (Samsung outsources their repair to Maytag) told me I had plenty of company with other people who had crappy Samsungs. Samsung ended up giving me my money back for the fridge. (And to think I replaced a working Montgomery Ward's fridge with the Samsung.)
Now I have a Whirlpool. Is it any quieter than the others? Well, Whirlpool makes KitchenAid, JennAir, Amana, Maytag, and some other names. They're all pretty much the same fridges with different nametags on them.
I have a GE Profile (bottom freezer, French doors), it's almost five years old. While it is very quiet, the fan and condenser have each gone out at different times (VERY inconveniently during the summer). Thankfully, it was still under warranty when those things happened. My only other complaint with it is that the ice has a tendency to fall out of the back of the ice cube tray onto the bottom of the freezer section. My brother and SIL have a similar model (by another maker) and it happens to them, too, so that may just be a design flaw for this style.
Please tell me that, "We have to turn it off every time we're in the kitchen," was written in jest. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
Geez. You haven't heard much if that's the most ridiculous thing you've ever heard. Yes, it's true. Small house, loud fridge. That's why I asked the question.
Thanks for the advice everyone, by the way!
I have a whirlpool side by side "gold series", and I will say the noise is noticeable.
Something to keep in mind.
My compact LG fridge (french doors, bottom freezer) is pretty quiet - I hardly ever notice it in my small apartment.
I feel like the Ikea counter depth Whirlpool model we have is very quiet, but it's really the first modern fridge I've owned, so to you it might be loud.
Why not just walk around the appliance showrooms turning the fridges on to see how loud they are? Some of the ones near me keep them plugged in but off, so the light still goes on when you open them.
