Do you know what an average serving size is? The folks at Wisegeek calculated what 200 calories from 70 different foods looks like on the plate. We found it so interesting to see it all laid out. Do any of the representations surprise you?

Important question: how big is the plate?
I'd rather visual cues than weigh everything I eat. Not on a diet, so that would just be silly.
That looks like a lot of bread for 200 calories...
I don't about 4 slices of hearty-looking bread. The low carb no-grain garbage i sometimes buy is 45 cal a slice. 4 slices of good bread would be more like 300ish.
Agree with kariak on the bread. I buy Sara Lee Delightfull which is 45 calories a slice. Most breads are more around the 90-120 cal/slice range, and I always thought that whole grain breads tended to be even higher...
I've been saying for ages that THIS is what should be on PSAs. Not soda cups overflowing with fat or other scare tactics, but actual education. That plus salad dressing and soda and beer and a deli sandwich and baked chicken and fried chicken -- THIS is the type of information that people can really use to make healthier everyday decisions. Calories are abstract, and many of us don't have the time or will to count the things, and some even want to avoid the stigma of being on a diet. But if you look at this and know that for my daily 2,000, I can have alllll of that reasonably healthy food or, like, a couple slices of pizza -- that is real, useful, actionable information that can lead to healthier lives.
So, let's put these on billboards and subway ads and bus stops and everywhere else!
I would love to see this same visual, but ranked in order of nutritional bang for the buck so to speak.
This is great--impressive, surprising, shocking (the PB & cheese are so tiny!).
The plate is 10.25" (26cm) in diameter and the bowl is 6.25" (16cm)

This is a great visual to help show people how stuff balances out. A few years ago i went thru a calorie counting phase just to better educate myself. Its scary how fast they can add up, especially with refined and processed foods!
@Dreamydeary I know right? Simple and genius. I also thought it would be great to have a picture of a frozen meal, versus it's fresh counterpart. Like, see what you COULD have instead?
I could easily eat that much cheese (or more) in a sitting, but that much apple or broccoli? That would be hard. Bulk vs. stomach size...
Reddit repost?
They need to have something in the picture for scale, like a quarter. Only a couple of the pictures are easy to visualize.
Their is an app called "Figwee Portion Explorer". I have use this app on my iPad iPhone for the last three years. It works just like your photos of the foods shown above but also shows the nutritional values of the food items shown and it is scalablabe. The app does cost $2.00.
I clicked on the link to see the full list, and as I scrolled down, and thought "Wow, that man mealworms are only 200 calories?" And then I realized that was Fiber One Cereal... and it has been added to my listed of things I can't eat because, I quote my mom: "You've got issues, sweetie."
