Q: Tortilla chips are one of my guilty pleasures. Any suggestions for all those broken chips at the bottom of the bag? I use them to add crunch on salads and soups, but I am looking for more creative uses. I buy the organic, blue corn, unsalted varieties. Thanks!

Editor: A girl after my own heart, I see! For using up those crushed chips, take a look at some of our past posts on the topic:

Readers, what do you do with the broken tortilla chips at the bottom of the bag?

Martha Concrete Lam...

Besides adding them to stuff for texture, you might be able to put them in the food processor, grind them back to masa. Alton Brown did something similar, but with corn tortillas, on Good Eats. I think the episode was called "TORTilla Reform".
Maybe you could also use them for oven "frying" coating. You can use corn flakes. Maybe even for real frying.
I mix them with panko and use it to bread chicken or fish...makes a nice crust!
You can crush them up and use them to thicken chili. Using them for breading works well or as part of like a crunchy topping on a baked dish or casserole.
Use them in migas or chilaquiles, use them in tortilla soup, use them in a dredge for breading something, eat them straight out of the bag, etc
I love tossing a few tortilla chip bits into scrambled eggs with black beans, cheese and a little salsa..yum!
I used them as a crunchy topping for (what else but) tortilla soup. Sometimes I add a handful to the soup itself and blend them in as a thickener.
If you are me, then this week you dropped them into the almost empty jar of queso and stirred them around and ate them with a spoon, so as not to waste any. Not every day is for grownups.
chilaquiles!!!!!!!
One of our favorite local burrito places makes a "Black Bean Supercrunch" and a "Vegan Super Crunch." In addition to the beans, veggies and other expected fillings, there's crushed up tortilla chips, sprouted peas, sunflower seeds (or peanuts), etc. Great additions!
Sprinkle on top of a green salad. Use salsa instead of salad dressing.
MIGAS! Who knew tortilla chip crumbs could take breakfast tacos to the next level? I loved living with guys who always had tortilla chips around. Migas all day everyday.
Mizinformation, I wish I lived near you, that sounds amazing! Does that whole mix get stuffed in a burrito, or is it more of a dip to eat with chips?
Eat them... :D
Babygrace: All in! The burritos are as big as your head, and completely unadorned on the outside, which is what the salsa bar is for, I guess. I copied the menu description below, although when they say "bean sprouts," they actually use sprouted green peas, which are wonderful! (I probably shouldn't share this with the sensitive AT audience, but the burrito is SO big and warm, wrapped tight in a pale flour tortilla, that we joke it's a "shaved puppy." Thusly: "Man, I'm so hungry I could eat an entire shaved puppy by myself." "No way, too big, I gotta split that puppy." "That puppy looks so good, I *almost* want to cuddle it instead of stab it with a fork." Ahem.)
- Black Bean Supercrunch: Filled with black beans, cheese, fresh salsa, and lettuce, supercrunch earns it’s name with the addition of crushed tortilla chips, bean sprouts, and peanuts.
- The vegan supercrunch includes Spanish rice, pinto beans, fresh salsa, lettuce, and a terrifically crisp crunch from bean sprouts, crushed tortilla chips, and sunflower seeds.
I make a killer southwestern cheesecake and use the crushed tortilla chips for the crust. Delicious, easy and different.
They make a great bottom crust for a number of casseroles.
You may not want to use all crushed chips for chilaquiles, but with some beans or meat or veggies added in, even just crushed ones would probably be delicious! Chilaquiles are super easy, too! http://bowenappetit.com/2012/04/25/chipotle-chilaquiles/
How many people mentioned using chips on PB&Js on the PB&J post? MANY.
Crunch them up and throw in chocolate chip cookies.
Continue doing whatever it was that got you to bottom of the bag.
I make something I nicknamed a "Nacho Bowl" where I break up a handful or two of tortilla chips and throw the crumbs from the bottom of the bag on the baking sheet for my toaster oven. Then I put salsa, black beans, corn, and cheese on top and put it in the toaster oven (on broil) until it's the cheese is perfectly melty. Scrape it all into a bowl, throw some scallions, cilantro, maybe some more salsa, sour cream, guacamole, etc. on top and dig in! Having small pieces is good because you can easily eat it with a fork. It doesn't look so pretty but it tastes awesome and it's a great quicky meal when you're just cooking for one.
My mum always used them as part of the crispy topping for broccoli mac and cheese...
I did this yesterday and it was really good: http://notwithoutsalt.com/2009/08/13/oven-fried-onion-rings/
