Q: What's a good kitchen item gift that I can give to an arthritic aunt? She doesn't cook too much — just the basics — but she could do with anything that'd make things easier.

Editor: Rosa, one little gadget that some cooks we know really love is the Palm Peeler from Chef'n. (See more about it here.) If your aunt has arthritis in her fingers, this might help her out when peeling fruit and vegetables.
That's just one small suggestion. Readers, what are the most useful kitchen gadgets and tools for cooks with arthritis?

OXO is clearly a great starting point for cushy-handled basics, but remember that sometimes it's easier to upgrade to an electric item to do the work for her. While you and I may be fine with an ergonomic can opener, maybe she could really use an electric model. A more festive spin might be an electric wine opener.
My mom has arthritis, and after a spate of holiday baking, she's been singing the praises of her new silicone rolling pin.
Its rubber handles were more comfortable for her to grip than those of her old wooden rolling pin, and since the dough didn't stick to the rolling pin nearly as much, she was saved the finger strain of picking off sticky pieces of dough.
I manage a kitchen/furniture shop, and the one item that my arthritic customers consistently love is the following jar opener from Kuhn Rikon:

Opening jars can be difficult enough for those of us who are able bodied!
These jar openers from Lee Valley are awesome. My grandma has arthritis and bought them for the whole family! I never struggle with jars anymore. In college, my hallmates would bring hard-to-open jars of pickles and spaghetti sauce to me and I'd be able to pop the tops right off!

This looks like it would also be great for people with carpal tunnel. It's really frustrating how difficult it is to open jars and cans now too, so great links!
Thank you everyone !! I'm leaning towards the can opener and should probably order it soon!
Thanks again!
