Welcome to The Kitchn! Do things look a little different? We gave The Kitchn a fresher, brighter look for 2012, and we've improved the organization of the site. Here's a look at what's new:
• Six major channels that will help you find the content you most enjoy:
Recipes, Advice, Supplies, Kitchens, Drinks, & Gatherings. • Complete index of all our categories for easier browsing. You can see all of our categories here. • A better organized recipe index. • Cambria Bold, the editor of Re-Nest, has moved over to bring us more structured product reviews, as well as tours of farms, artisans, and producers of good food. We're so glad to add her editorial experience to the team!
These are just the first steps, and we're still working behind the scenes cleaning up, organizing, and making the reading experience even better. We have big plans editorially for 2012 — look for even more recipes, tutorials, tours, and kitchen design advice coming soon at The Kitchn.
One thing that isn't changing, however, is you, our readers. You are an essential part of what makes The Kitchn beloved by so many cooks, and we are grateful for your daily contributions to this community. We rely on you, and we hope that you enjoy The Kitchn's new look as much as we do.

It looks awesome - I'm excited to explore!
It looks great, but sadly a lot of pictures from old posts are missing! Like http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-sour-cherryalmond-ice-c-76238
Thanks! We're excited too!
@Crazyredhead, yeah, that's a temporary glitch due to the transition. All should be restored shortly!
I love the new look! It looks great!
Wow! What a redesign - I mean overhaul. I am looking forward to diving in.
Loving it- so thankful for the recipe index!
Wow! What a change. Looks great and I look forward to seeing what the new site design has to offer.
Fantastic! I love it :)
Phew! When I first went on to AT this morning, my first thought was "where's the Kitchen????" Glad it didn't take me long to find :) The fonts & everything look nice. Usability looks great & the design is much better than the previous versions. Keep up the great work!
The design is nice, but any chance you'll provide a more mobile-friendly layout as well?
I don't see a search option any longer - am I just missing it?
never mind - found it
I know a LOT of work goes into redesigning a site and I really want to like the results as I am such a fan... But I tend to browse AT (and component sites) with my iPad and the results look kind of choppy. For instance, I usually start with the latest on theKitchn, then browse over to Unplggd, then to AT, etc. With the new change, I only see links to AT and theKitchn. No link to my user account, either. I'm guessing these are visible from a conventional computer browser and will come back soon via my MacBook Pro to see what's missing compared with the iPad.
Lovely redesign! However, my feedburner isn't working. I've tried reinstalling my link (I use a gadget on my google home page) and no dice.
Getting this error:
"Uh oh: Error 404.
The page you were looking for doesn't exist. You may have mistyped the address or the page may have moved."
Thanks for looking into this.
I like it a lot.. One request... Please put the author's name back on the RSS feed. I click through a lot, just based on who wrote something, Now everything just says The Kitchn which isn't really helpful.
On RSS feeds - yep, there's a lot of missing pieces on them and we're working to get them up and running in an even better way shortly.
It looks great and I'm sure a lot of work went into the redesign.
. . . But where is the heading with the links to all Apartment Therapy sites? I found that to be very useful while surfing through Apartment Therapy--didn't have to type each different web address. Especially since I can't remember the names of all the sites.
I did like your old font better though. :-/
While I really want to like the redesign too and appreciate all the hard work. I have to say i miss the links to the other AT sites. There are so many categories for browsing now, it's just a bit much if you're interested in all of the topics.
Also find all the differing fonts a bit of a challenge visually speaking.
Good luck on working out all the bugs!
I'd also like to request a more mobile friendly design, or a mobile site. A couple other blogs I read do that, and it is a nice feature.
Can't wait to see what's in store! Congrats Cambria, yay! Looks great!~ Audrey
I agree with the request for the links to the other AT sites at the top of the page - otherwise I probably won't bother visiting the other pages very often.
for the most part i think i might grow to really enjoy this new look, at least for the kitchn, things are mush easier to find and search for. My one complaint is with the extreme slowness of the whole site. Im assuming that this is only due to the on going work and tweaks that you guys are still making with the new changes but i figured i would let you know incase it was something that needed to be addressed.
I must say though, the photographs look amazing with the redesign. I can't tell what's making them look better?
I am normally the kind of person who is all for change, and I think the old site needed some updating. It looks very clean now. It has the feel of Epicurious, or MyRecipes which are very well organized and easy to navigate. I always thought The Kitchn had a little more personality than the other sites and was more than just a recipe clearinghouse. I'm sure I will get used to it though. The other layout made me feel like I was going to visit a friend, this design feels very impersonal.
LOVE the redesign -- looks very crisp and clean and clear -- love the font changes, it all looks so classic, I don't find it impersonal at all, in fact I think it looks more homey! I feel like I'm in the minority but I was bored stiff with the old AT/Ohdeedoh/Kitchn layout -- I think all of this is like a breath of FRESH AIR!
Overall, I like it, but, like the others, have one complaint. The titles of the articles are in too big of a font, and the centering makes the reading experience poor. The should be aligned left, and with a smaller font so they're less likely to wrap to two lines.
i don't like....but i hate change
Unfortunately, reading this site on an iPhone (using the most recent version of Mobile Safari as the web browser) became more difficult with the new changes. Everything is *huge*, and requires a bunch of scrolling around just to take in the images or read the text.
@Sairuh, yes, we are working on a better mobile experience -- that will roll out soon.
PLSSSSSSSSS get rid of this font!!! It is so hard on the eyes. Go back to what you had before.
Is this going to be like AT on the Main section? i.e. only featured posts are listed instead of ALL posts? Please say no...
No AKAY, we post less frequently on The Kitchn, so all of our posts will continue to flow down the front page of The Kitchn. The channels are just a more focused way of browsing.
It's so crazy - I can't get this web site to load properly as I scroll down. The text and pictures just bunch on top of themselves until things catch up and then everything looks okay. Happens every time I try to move down the page. Doesn't happen on the Apartment Therapy site, though. Makes me really sad that I can't read the Kitchn anymore.
Is Ohdeedoh permanently gone? I had so many great ideas bookmarked. I just checked and it seems like the urls have changed. I'm so sad! Goodbye great 2nd birthday ideas...
@Eureka, we can't reproduce the issue you're having - can you please email support@apartmenttherapy.com with your browser and platform info? A screenshot would be swell, too. We totally appreciate it - thanks!
@KLS2003 no, Ohdeedoh's content, editor, and team are intact at http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/family ... Your bookmarks and URLs should direct to the same places. If any of them are broken, please email us - that's a bug.
Thanks for all your efforts! I know a ton of work goes into an update.
I'm another one who is having trouble. Something about the combination of the bright background, font and font size feels visually glaring to me. Usually I appreciate a larger font size but taken altogether, when I cruise over here my automatic reaction is to back up about eight inches so viewing feels visually more comfortable.
Is there a link to get here from the new AT site? I didn't see it and had to pull up The Kitchn from my browser history.
Love the change!
I like the new look, but please hurry up and restore the Kitchn-specific RSS feed! Thanks :)
Hi there, from the comments above it seems like you know this but your RSS feed is no longer working. I'm getting no updates from the Kitchn and lots of updates from Apartment Therapy. Hope you can fix it soon because I miss reading the blog!
@all, yep! The Kitchn and Apartment Therapy are now more prominently linked by a house ad/button in the righthand column.
And yes, RSS feed issues are at the top of the list - our tech team has been working on it diligently, but there were a couple of unexpected issues. Should be restored soon!
Thanks so much for all your kind words, and please do continue to send feedback and suggestions our way.
Oh, dear. Change, even a good change, can take some getting used to, but I seem to be having difficulty with this redesign. After supper, I like to kick back in a comfy chair with my iPad and catch up with TheKitchn, AT, and - previously - Unplggd, Renest, and even Ohdeedoh (no kids, but I'm an auntie). With the new design, that is no longer as pleasant as it used to be. For one thing, pages - as they load on an iPad, are quite "slidey" because of their width. It seems that a good number of your writers have iPads, so you should be able to check this out to see what I mean.
More importantly (to me, anyway), I miss the one-click navigation at the top of every page. It was SO handy! Top-level navigation is not nearly so handy now, and so I find that I tend to skip visiting anything but the two main sites.
And, while I'm whining, I find that I resent all the real estate given to AT and TK Top Posts and Top Tours at the bottom of the page, especially when posts/tours tend to linger forever in the top spots. I'm much more interested in seeing what's new than looking at the same top post/tour links visit after visit.
I was involved in a site redesign myself last year and I truly do appreciate the amount of effort it requires. I'm really trying to love the changes, but - sorry - am still not feeling it.
how in the world do i get to my account? i liked going there to see my comments so i could check back on those same articles!!!!!
Like the new layout. Miss the old font and font size.
@CCCB12, there's a "My Account" link in the far upper right corner of the page. You can also get to your account by clicking your name when it shows up in a comment (or to click on another user's name, if you want to check out their comments).
So, um, to revisit my earlier whining about site nav, I think my problem is that I don't come here to look for Recipes, Supplies, Advice, Kitchens, Drinks, Gatherings - not as separate channels. I come looking for what's new and what's interesting. And, now that I've made three comments in this thread, I will try not being such a grumpus about it and see if I can't get used to the changes.
The san-serif fonts are killing my eyes---in graphic design school we learned that serif'd fonts are better for reading body copy and easier on the eyes---I'm not coming to this site as often because of this and I've skipped going to the main AT site all together (I usually go to both this and the main AT site several times a day). The font is really really big, too and the centered headlines are awkward to read. Photos look good, though...
As a reader with a visual impairment, I find the redesign much more difficult to read. There is too much text and when using it screen magnification is difficult navigate. I used to read it daily, now, my daughter tells me when there is a recipe I might like and prints it for me.
I wonder why my comment on Monday doesn't appear?--about the (documented) difficulties reading and comprehending non-serif fonts, esp @ smaller sizes, for anyone over 20.....Suggested instead :)
CAMBRIA font : the classic by Bosma, et al.
per WIkipedia: "Cambria is part of the suite of fonts that comes with Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows 7.........specifically designed for on-screen reading and to be aesthetically pleasing when printed at small sizes. ....."
@8Strudel I think the comment you left was actually in Maxwell's post - see it here.
Did you get rid of the archive function? I know when I go away for a while, I love to be able to pull up the archive week by week and pick out the postings that I missed that I want to catch up on. That's really hard to do off of the main page just endlessly scrolling, but I'm not seeing any other option now.
Somehow the redesign seems to have messed up the Kitchn RSS feed. Mine hasn't updated since 1/8 in Google Reader. When I tried to re-add it, it just tried to give me the full AT RSS feed instead of the Kitchn.
is is possible to have your content searchable by more than one category? for example I'd like to search for a recipe that is both quick and vegetarian. Or maybe that is possible and I can't figure it out...
The new recipe index is magnificent - being able to search by season is particularly handy for us southern hemisphere folk! Well done.
While your at it, how about adding a new category - lo-fat?
@CUPIDE430 yes, the RSS feeds needed some major work, and that should be done soon. All will be restored! :)
@KEFWMC we're moving that direction; a much more powerful and sophisticated recipe (and overall site) search is in the works.
FYI - for those of us going through Kitchn RSS feed withdrawal - the RSS feed (Atom) link is still, oddly, set to the apartment therapy main feed. If you click on the blue icon right above it named "our reading list," you can be subscribed to all of the Kitchn's favorite blogs, including the the Kitchn itself. Unsubscribe from all of the other blogs (unless you see some that look interesting), and volia! the Kitchn RSS feed is back in your reader!
Given that they have the code for the Kitchn RSS feed all set up, though, it doesn't seem as though it would be too hard to fix the link so that we don't have to go through all of that rigamarole. But hopefully it will be fixed soon...
