This is a super exciting day for all of us here at the office and beyond, where a bunch of us work from home. We're all sitting behind our computers madly typing away on the blog, IM, Facebook and Twitter as the traffic ramps up, and we deal with tech issues, fan mail and questions that come with the territory of such a big change on a Monday morning.
We've been working on this for at least two years, and I want to explain a little bit of the thinking behind what you see here.
PUTTING THE VISUAL DELICIOUS BACK IN
The biggest, funnest change came when I realized that we needed to look at fashion websites, not food sites, in order to properly LOVE our photographs and own up to the fact that what we do is VISUAL and photo-driven. By stripping away all the visual clutter on the front page, increasing the white space and moving the ads to the right side, we're now able to really push the glamour and visual deliciousness of food and cooking.
We're going to keep going. We're working on improving all of our photo and editing skills and want to eventually make the images even bigger. Sometimes the best ideas come from unlikely places.
R.I.P OHDEEDOH ET. AL...
Now it's simple. We're all about FOOD and DESIGN.
The biggest change concerns the combining of our four design sites under the Apartment Therapy banner. While no one will miss Ohdeedoh (my daughter Ursula's first words), Unplggd and Re-Nest more than me, it has become clear over the past few years that these sites have a tremendous amount of overlap in audience and content and that trying to grow five separate brands is really difficult. With most of our traffic coming in through the Apartment Therapy URL, it also seemed like such a waste not to be able to more easily show off all the great posts on the other three sites.
So we put them together to make two sites — one really big, home design super-site and one fabulous food site that's quickly becoming really big too.
While our design site is growing new channels, so will The Kitchn, as the new design is going to allow us to think more broadly about how food and cooking impact our homes. We'll be hiring and adding new channels to cover all these different aspects over the next year, so keep your eyes peeled. We want to be THE place you go when you are looking for inspiration, tips, news, kitchen style AND recipes that will help you make better food at home for your friends and family.
MAIN IS NOT EVERYTHING
While the "main page" may be where you go first, also note that we've created channels to help you home in on the topics that interest you the most. Maybe you're just here for kitchen design inspiration and don't care as much about the cooking tips. Well then — follow our new Kitchens channel, which is all design, tours, and renovation ideas. Or perhaps you love parties and holidays and just want to find inspiration for gatherings of all sorts — the Gatherings channel will help you find what you need. But if you want to see it all, all the time, then read the front page (Main) — everything will go there as well.
A NEW REAR END
Finally, what's really been taking so long and going on behind the scenes is a whole new back end and platform on which to post and move all our content around. All of this work has been like plumbing - not glamorous and slow going - but it's absolutely essential as we're getting scarily close to 10 million monthly uniques between our two sites and needing badly to upgrade our Community and Marketplace features into the blogs.
There are many details, but those are the main reasons we made the changes you see here. We'll be working hard to iron out all the wrinkles and then start the fun part - adding new features for you all to play with. For all of you new readers, as well as you diehards who have been with us since 2004, THANKS SO MUCH for being here today and continuing on this crazy journey into 2012.
I had no idea in 2004 that I would be doing this full time with a talented team of 18 full-time folks and getting to write and converse with all of you every day. It's a dream come true.

Straw Mat from The ...

Love the new site, very excited to navigate it all with the incoming new content!
Keep kickin' ass, Apartment/Kitchn Therapists ;)
Looks gorgeous, can't wait to see what's next!
I'm excited to explore the new format, but if I may, I would like to suggest having a direct link to Apartment Therapy's main page from theKitchn and vice versa. It may already be coming, but I often toggle between the two sites, and that piece of improved functionality would really be helpful. I know this required a ton of thought and work, so well done!
Congrats, and nice job!
Bad Mama Genny
I second VXROUR's suggestion of direct links between the sites. Exciting stuff so far; the redesign looks great!
I'm excited about the new changes, too - and couldn't agree more with VXROUR. I would love a way to toggle between the two sites and so far, the only way I can figure out is to go scroll down and click on a AT Top Post link.
Thanks for the always informative, educational and inspirational posts!
Third VXROUR's suggestion of direct links between the sites. I panicked this morning when I couldn't easily find The Kitchn. I'm better now. Whew!
Oh, I definitely second the request to add a link to AT from the main page. I read both sites, and have just one bookmarked because I've always been able to jump over to the other. Sure I could add another bookmark to my toolbar, but it would be nice to be able to jump back and forth between the sites without it. Loving the new look and channels.
Love the simplification!!! Usually use the thekitchn.com directly, but a more prominent link between the two would be helpful, even if just for a time. We adjust slowly you know.:)
Cheers to your refresh!

The new site is much sleeker and easier to navigate. Great job! I love this site and it is always one of my go to places for food and design ideas. Keep up the wonderful work.
Thanks for all the nice words, everyone! And yes, we're putting in a strong link to Apartment Therapy up top - look for that very soon.
Very nice! There's a less "homey" feel to the site now on first glance, but overall it looks so much better.
All your hard work shows, enjoying finding my way around the new site. Look forward to see what other changes you have in store!
Nicely done! Overall, great upgrades. One request: Could we please have all the kitchen tours, Before & Afters, Kitchen Spotlight, cheap upgrades and related kitchen space design ideas in one spot? It might just be because I'm in the middle of a reno, but that's the #1 thing I look for here. Right now, the "Tours" section doesn't include many of the spaces found elsewhere on the site, nor does the "Kitchens" section. I had to go to ApartmentTherapy and poke around before I found the "Rooms/Kitchen" section with many of the kitchen design examples I'd found before on TheKitchn. For example, you just posted "Simone's Down To Earth" kitchen tour, but it's not under the "Tours" section of TheKitchn nor in the "Kitchens" section of AT. Just looking for one link that has all the kitchen spaces. Thanks for asking for feedback, and keep up the good work!
HORRIBLE. No ReNest? How could you? I won't visit nearly as much, and I
REALLY resent the change. Ugly. Boring. Bland, and common.
OMG, the non-stop video commercial to the right is irritating as all get-out. I so hope I dont have to find a new site to replace AT and now so irked that the kitchn isnt even connected to it. The font is about ready to blow my eyeballs up. Just hideous!! So totally disappointed.
I'M one of the 'crabby, and I hate this' apt ther huuuuuuuuuuuge fans..I tried..i'm not comfortable with the 'perusing ability' switching back easily between kitchen/renet/obeedoh and design..if it 'aint' broke don't fix it' now really applies here as far as I'M concerned..and the font doesss feel hurty to my eyes as well..cry cry cry..The 'old way' suited me in every way..but I am sure it will stay the way it is now.........
I think it's always good to simplify a business to its main elements. Do what works...do less of what doesn't work. Makes sense to me.
Congrats on all of your success! It's inspiring to read about.
I miss the old site-I agree this one looks boring and common like every other blog. I find it really annoying to read.Sorry but I think you should rethink the layout.
How do I SEARCH?!! I have half an old pizza dough written down sited as theKitchn, but I can't find it in the browsing section and can't search theKitchn for "pizza dough"! This change is welcome, but I suspect that the transition will also be slightly traumatic if I can't even find the search bar! HELP!
Surely someone named after a classic font would know that SERIFed fonts have been shown to be easier to read and more comprehensible online. Per Wikipedia: "Cambria is part of the suite of fonts that comes with Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac and Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, specifically designed for on-screen reading and to be aesthetically pleasing when printed at small sizes. It is a transitional serif font...." Wikipedia accessed 1/9/12
re-change recommended please.
I love it! And I love that I can just straight to the Supplies section - I always loved the articles that focused on pantry needs and tools. And I'll definitely be utilizing the Seasons tab on the left.
Nice job.
Like the clean, fresh, readable, uncluttered look. The white gives you a nice background for whatever you run.
Yes, please provide permanent links to the other sites. I freaked out a little when I couldn't link to thekitchn from AT today! I will miss Ohdeedoh LOTS.
What I do love about this new format is that I can adjust the size of my browser window and cut out the ads on the right so I never have to see them.
Love it! Organized REALLY well and more user friendly. Yawl rawk!
Wow. "REALLY resent" the change? Resent? Goodness. Such drama!
The new look is perfectly fine. The ads on the side ARE super annoying. I get it...you've got to pay the bills, but still...
I wonder if in the recipe index you'll ever break the recipes down into main ingredient: Chicken, Beef, Fish, etc? That would be uber-helpful.
But even if you don't, I'll keep coming back.
1) I was going to agree with VXROUR, and then I saw that you've got a link on the right hand column! Can you keep that on the top? On some pages it's below an advert.
2) I checked to make sure my bookmarks for both sites still work and thankfully, they still do. Please NEVER, ever, change that! I truly rely on those bookmarks,
3) The recipe index is better than what came before, but can you please add a search function within each type of dish? You are going to keep growing, you know, and it won't be fun to search for the pasta dish with specific ingredients if the name of the post doesn't ring a bell, or if you want to cook with what's in your fridge.
4) I kinda agree with 8Strudek about serif fonts, although it doesn't feel unpleasant to read at the moment.
5) Maxwell's comment about being inspired by fashion sites is a bit scary. Fashion is about being trendy and exclusive, One reason I enjoy both AT and this site is that they have been the opposite... open, inclusive, acknowledging trends but decidedly *not* a slave to them. I hope that doesn't change.
I know y'all worked very long and hard on this, and made some easy and difficult decisions...it looks really lovely. I love the clean lines, the white with the color palette and the font. It's very "IKEA" to me. And trust me, that's a great thing! :-) Best wishes from San Diego, CA. Can't wait to see more!!
I like it. I've seen a lot of site renovations in my time, and my eyes agree with this one.
I miss the old site! :-(
I echo the comments that this is less homey and common. What an uninspired logo. Sorry, but I'll likely be going to Pinterest first for my food inspiration now.
Do your employees actually like to work in such an intrusive, non-private environment? I hope you can remake their work environment as well - maybe have one of your Apartment Therapy successes step in. If this is the current direction of work places, I am glad to be retired.
wow, wow, wow!!! Congrats. Can't wait to explore it ALL!!
I love the seasonal tab. Being from the southern hemisphere my seasons are all backwards from this (and most) food blogs so being able to look at posts easily based on season is great.
Besides that the other changes don't bother me one way or another particularly much.
I think it looks great. Not that there was something wrong with the old site, but this one is easier on the eyes. I especially like the categorization, really nice job. The only thing I don't like are the video ads. They're annoying.
I think the new site is absolutely lovely, and the structural changes you describe sound well-thought-out and easy to navigate. I can't wait to get more familiar with it; this has been my favorite cooking resource since I discovered it, and I think that will continue to be the case! Thank you and your staff very much for all the work that you do.
The bright lemon yellow on golden brown for the hyperlinks is god-awful on the eyes. And the fonts and fonts sizes are very unapealing. I didn't go on AT much (only for some unplggd posts) but I won't be visiting anymore since there's no linkage at the bottom of the posts. And I tried the search field and I got a 404 error for almost all the items found. And while I'm at it, an advanced search engine would do you great. The search results are always a mess to dig through. /2 cents
I really like the site and the changes. Thanks for working hard to give us all delicious inspiration!
Looks beautiful, gang! It's a place I want to hang out. Thanks for making an inviting, useful space for us all. Good luck!
I think I'm kind of ambivalent towards the changes, although I think the new logo is rather uninspired.
And I think others have mentioned it, and I too recognize the need to pay the bills, but for the love of Pete, I HATE the pop-up that rears it's ugly head about 30 seconds after opening the page. Is it annoying enough that I won't visit as often? Probably.
I don't like it, but I don't do well with change, I'll get used to it and probably end of liking it.
Funnest? I don't think that's a word
Would you consider making the font size/photo/headlines just a wee bit smaller? Before, I used to be able to see more than 1 story before having to scroll down on the home page, whereas now each entry takes up almost my whole screen. As a past web designer myself, I was taught to give people more *before* they have to scroll/click to another page. I recently had this same problem with the re-design of another favorite site so I guess it's the "thing" now (Windows 7's new "puffy" layout anyone?), but please consider scaling everything down a smidge. It's like a large-print book.
@Cirilism yes, this is something we all want to tweak. Personally I use a laptop for my daily work, so I'm very conscious of those viewing the site on smaller screens. (All but 15% of our readers, I believe, view on screens my resolution or less.)
I actually don't have that small of a screen, unless 19" is considered so these days.
But the home page today showed this as my full screen: http://www.flickr.com/photos/74112375@N00/6680213707/in/photostream. There's only 30% content on the page (the rest, navigation and ads) and of that 30%, it's all just one thing.
It doesn't need a redesign, just smaller fonts for headlines and text (like the font/size you have in all the left navigation entries) and only horizontal, smaller scale pictures.
Change is good!! Early impressions from me are good. Looking forward to the evolution.
At the end of the day, CONTENT is king! I think your team does a great job of that and I expect my visits to remain consistent.
Keep it movin'! ;)
I've expressed my opinion on the main page (Apartment Therapy) already, immediately after the change. I really appreciate the larger pictures, the larger fonts, the cleaner look. Best of all, the site has become very, very fast. And after some time now I love it even more! Very well done!
But I may have found a bug today, or you know it already. After doing a search (here 'finger food') and clicking on one of the links in the search results, I cannot see the comments on that thread. Which is a pity because in the comments is what I've been looking for.
E.g. this thread http://www.thekitchn.com/good-question-w-1-6353
It says 36 comments but I can see one only and I don't know how to get to the rest. Any idea?
@MollyHeyer thanks for the bug report -- that isn't a known issue at this point (all community/comments features should be up and running) so I'll turn it over to the tech team. Thanks!
