Vino: Segura Viudas Brut Rosé

Vino: Segura Viudas Brut Rosé

We'll spare you the sordid details of our first encounter with cava. Think about an inexperienced barely legal drinker trying to impress an almost-as-inexperienced new boyfriend and assume the worst. Let's just say that since then we've steered clear of Freixenet Cordon Negro and its dauntingly frosted black bottle.

Recently, however, a bottle of Segura Viudas Brut Rosé, which is made by Freixenet, came across our table and we were pleasantly surprised. This cava is softer than the typical, more astringent sparkling wines you might encounter. There are hints of sweetness in there, so if a dry sparkler is your style, this might not be the wine for you. Considering a bottle will set you back well under $10, it's definitely worth a try.

Although we aren't exactly cellaring cases of it to bring out as special treats for important guests, we think it's a fine bottle for summer celebrations, especially with finger foods like pâté and grilled shrimp.
