We've done our fair share of grilling vegetables like asparagus, portobello mushrooms and the like. But watermelon? Does that even work? If Mark Bittman says so, we believe it. Have you tried grilled watermelon?
True to form, Mark Bittman put together a stellar list of interesting vegetables to throw on the grill in today's New York Times. Sweet potatoes and jicama? Come to think of it, those sound great grilled. And I could go for a tasty marinated slice of grilled eggplant. But lettuce? And watermelon?! Who knew?

Grilled watermelon is superb! It gets so sweet and slightly smokey from the grill. We had it a couple weeks ago chopped up on top of some honey-mustard grilled salmon, with green olives and parsley. A-MAY-ZING.
We made the curried sweet potato and portabello mushroom recipes from this article this weekend - inspired by the article to fire up the grill for the first time this summer. Amazing! the sweet potatoes are a must for people who love sweet potato as a savory food and not a sweet food. Usually when we grill we do several kinds of meat and one veggie. This time we did the exact opposite and no one missed the meat. I also love grilling Asparagus.
I used to work at a restaurant where they served a grilled watermelon salad. The presentation was very elegant -- a big white plate with triangles of yellow and red watermelon stacked in the middle, dressed with a spicy soy vinaigrette and sprinkled with green onions and sesame seeds. The taste combo is out of this world -- I'm definitely going to be recreating that dish the next time I get near a grill!
I'm a huge fan of grilled pineapple...And I think watermelon will have to be on the grill this weekend.
I had a grilled watermelon salad at Commander's Palace last summer. It was interesting, but then, they can make anything taste good. :)
