Do you get tired of peeling stickers off your fruit? It gets tiresome, removing a sticker from every single apple, and they often take the delicate skin right off plums and pluots. Well, here's a bright concept that promises to make the process easier — and cleaner!
This design by Scott Amron turns the label into fruit soap that washes away dirt, wax, and pesticides. The label dissolves under water, with some rubbing, although it is somewhat water resistant. You can peel the sticker off, too, like regular labels.

No word on whether this will be adopted by any big produce companies — but we like the idea!

that's a smart idea hope it goes into effect
Awesome! This will encourage folks to wash produce which is always a good thing. Great idea. I can see it being a problem for grocers though, with the misty spray timers turning a lot of labels into blobs, and general issues with shipments getting wet.
File this under "things I wish I thought of". Seriously brilliant idea.
I'm not sure I want even more chemicals on my produce. No thanks.
It's an interesting idea...but I'm with cbreynolds...I'm trying to get less chemical crap in my food, not more. :( Plus, I don't think soap can remove pesticides.
Yeah, I've never felt the need to use soap on any of my produce. I just rinse with water, or something's really visibly dirty (like potatoes) scrub with a brush. Maybe I'm not paranoid enough about dirt/germs. But I think I'd be more paranoid about a soapy taste if I didn't rinse thoroughly enough...
I have always washed ALL of my produce with dish detergent, just as I wash the canned food items I use. I don't know whose hands picked the food, where it was stored before packaging/delivery (near rats/roaches, etc.) and who may have sneezed or, God forbid, something worse, on or near it!
It seems to do a good job on my dishes as well, so I intend to continue this practice.
I think these stickers are a great idea!
For those concerned about the chemicals: Fruit soap is actually a thing in countries where tap water is not potable. When I visit my in-laws in Mexico, we soak lettuce, veggies and soft skinned fruits (like grapes, for example) in a solution of water and Fruit rinse- which both kills microcritters and removes pesticides.
This is a totally neat idea.
brilliant
Brilliant.
That's a pretty fantastic idea.
Genius!
While I don't normally use any kind of soap or detergent on my produce when I rinse them I do really appreciate this idea. Those little stickers are a pain and I hate that the majority aren't biodegradable.
I had a state park ranger tell me that they find those little plastic stickers all over their parks from people eating fruit and not thinking that one tiny plastic sticker makes a difference. But multiply that by just a fraction of the people who visit a state park in a year and it's a lot of little stickers.
Very interesting idea. I become infuriated when my compost ends up with nasty stickers. So this would be great, but what are the stickers made of? If the contents remain a mystery, how do we know there's no toxins in the end product?
@Slow Lorus, I'll never get why people don't think of those stickers as garbage. I find them stuck all over the place in my office's kitchen and it drives me nuts.
I remember seeing a story a while back about laser "tattooed" labels on fruit or veggie rinds. I'd be more interested in seeing that idea developed.
If it takes off that damn wax I'm all for it!
I think it's a great idea. As a cancer patient, I learned to wash everything in Dr.Bronner's peppermint soap---which is, by the way, the perfect way to eliminate fruit flies on bananas.
A cute idea, but I don't think produce wash is going to get all the chemicals out.
My husband sticks those stupid stickers on everything, so I think this idea is genius. I love it.
Thank you! I hate those stickers! And if it removes the wax on apples, hallelujah.
Awesome!
