R.I.P. PC Magazine
Magazine Will Be Online Only

112008PCMag.jpgSign of the times, the 27 year old mainstay of personal computing news (we remember purchasing issues when we were working/playing on a Compaq 386DX/33) is shutting up shop from the print edition end and going completely online. The reasons come down to simple economics, with PC Magazine deriving more than 80% of their profit and about 70% of their revenue from online content. Makes sense, but we're still a little sad losing the print edition, since our own background includes tech publications (anyone remember The Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine?).

Which brings us to this question: are you still purchasing tech magazines on newsstands in print edition anymore? Or have you gone completely online for your tech news? Or like us, do you still occasionally purchase magazines but receive the bulk of your tech/gear news via websites and blogs?

i do remember The Official Sega Dreamcast magazine! in fact i had found a stack of issues which i kept for prosperity since '99 in my mom's basement a few days ago.

however, i've been on a recycling and donation binge lately and they've been whisked away into the recycling bin. there are some old Next Gen magazines in there too.

i would have to agree that tech news is definitely easier to read from RSS. when i do visit pcworld.com i occasionally click on an advertisement to compare prices as well. when you read a magazine you get bombarded by two page ad spreads and feel the need to tear them out before reading any further.
