DIY The Better Looking Cardboard Laptop Stand

112008_rg_diylaptopcardboard_01.jpgWe recently showed you how to make your own laptop cooler using only cardboard and a salvaged fan from an old PC. The only trouble is that it looked kind of bad and was a fire hazard if you'd use anything but corrugated cardboard. Thankfully, we've come upon a design that will make things even easier.

112008_rg_diylaptopcardboard_02.jpgFirst of all, what you need to notice is that this stand can be made out of different materials. Anything from wood to acrylic can be used, it doesn't really matter. What matters is the amount of time and the tools that you have available in order to complete this little build.

112008_rg_diylaptopcardboard_03.jpgEric Skiff is part of the NYC Resistor group and got a crick in his neck while craning at his laptop. He had some scrap lying around and decided to use a Lazzzor to cut himself a laptop stand. A Lazzzor is a modified laser used for cutting softer things and prototyping. Sounds like science-fiction, but NYC Resistor has tried this on acrylic and cardboard without igniting them or melting them. In place of creating your own Lazzzor, you can always use plain old scissors or a very sharp knife.

112008_rg_diylaptopcardboard_04.jpgAll you have to do is download the pattern from Thingiverse and print it out. Place it on the piece of material that you've selected, like a piece of cardboard, and cut it out. Since the stand is made out of three flat pieces of cardboard, it's easily transportable. You can store it easily and take it with you anywhere you go. We think that this stand is a great idea. It's a cheap, great looking solution to a problem that we all have.

112008_rg_diylaptopcardboard_05.jpgNow if you can't be bothered to try this out, you can always purchase one on Etsy for $8.00. If cardboard doesn't suit your style, you can always buy the Steampunkish acrylic version for about $30.[via TrendsNow, photos by Eric Skiff]
