During cold and flu season, we make sure the pantry is well stocked with honey, ginger, lemon, and a few other ingredients so we can easily stir up soothing beverages for ourselves and loved ones. Here are five of our go-to drinks for calming a sore throat to combating a full-blown, hacking cough.
(Shown above the jump, from left to right)
• 1 Bourbon Cough Syrup for Grownups - A steaming, sweet nightcap
• 2 Turmeric-Ginger Tea - A comforting sore throat soother
• 3 IMPERIA Sweet Standard - A cocktail of vodka, honey, and ginger
• 4 Flu Season Ginger Honey Lemon Tonic - A warming drink for chilly winter days
• 5 Easy Homemade Ginger Ale - Although it's incredibly easy, this does take a few days to make, so if you want something faster, you might also check out our syrup-based D.I.Y. Ginger Ale

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

I clearly remember hiding from my mom when she would try to give me warm honey, whiskey, and lemon. It all around did the trick, and yes, I was a child.
like skullanssparrow my mom would give me a mixture of honey, lemon, whiskey and hot water. I loved it and thought it was much better then regular cough syrup. In the mornings I would get a spoonful of honey which also did the trick
this couldn't have come at a better time. my head is ready to explode...don't have any whisky but lemon honey and hot water will have to do.
hot toddies seriously do wonders on a pesky cold.
I also got the hot lemon whiskey treatment as a child, with the addition of white pepper (it's only been in my 30s that I've finally grown to *like* bourbon). It stops sore throats immediately and is my go-to whenever I feel under the weather. I've brewed it up/passed the recipe on to many friends who think I'm a witch doctor/miracle worker! :)
yep, my mom did the whisky, lemon, honey deal when I was a kid too. also the warm water with salt gargle trick...how do moms know all?!
Ok perfect timing because I just developed a cold like 2 days ago. I'm stocking up today on this stuff!
One question though: the ginger ale recipe calls for baker's yeast. Is that the block of stuff in the cold case at the grocery store or is it the jar/packet of yeast granules on the shelf?
Thanks!
The hot toddy recipe is my favorite when I get a cold (which oddly I think I am as I type) I felt like the heavens opened up when someone told me about it. I can sip booze instead of robotussin?!?! Too good to be true ;)
Some people swore to me years ago about gargling with hot water mixed with cayenne. I love cayenne pepper but the taste brewed in water lingered and made me gag!
Rosemary Wine - Add bruised rosemary leaves, honey and lemon juice to white wine, bring to a gentle boil, simmer for a few moments.
This soothes a raw throat, warms you through and is best sipped just before bed.
I like a hot Whiskey Mac, as well.
My sister was away in a Italy a few weeks ago and got a cold. A fellow traveler from Germany told her to to mince up a purple onion and put it in a bowl with brown sugar, cover and let it sit and create a syrup. She tried it and was AMAZED at how well it worked! She felt fine the next day and was able to enjoy the rest of her trip. She said it was not gross either.
My husband's from Ireland and he heats orange juice to nearly boiling and then adds a healthy dose of whiskey and honey. It does an AMAZING job, and it tastes great.
