If you love grapefruit for breakfast, you've got to try running it under the broiler for a few minutes. We realize this might sound a little strange. Fruit? Under the broiler?! But trust us, it's the perfect treat to get your day started off right!
The intense heat of the broiler gives the grapefruit half a caramelized crust, so you get a sweet-smoky flavor in every bite of fruit. It makes the perfect contrast to the tartness of the grapefruit.
Just a few minutes cut-side up under the broiler should do it. Take the grapefruit out as soon as the top starts to get brown and bubbly. A little brown sugar sprinkled on top before broiling makes it even better!
Besides scooping it straight from the source, we like squeezing the broiled grapefruit to make juice (also an excellent cocktail mixer!). Any leftover fruit can go into salads later in the day or get saved for an afternoon snack.
Give it a try!

This is, indeed, fantastic. I've been doing it a lot lately, and I love this way to eat grapefruit. Plus the leftover juice (I am not a neat grapefruit-eater) is really delicious.
Cinnamon is delicious on top too!
My grandma would do this when I was little, with a little table sugar. What a nice memory! :)
this is giving me fantasies of broiled grapefruit topped with coconut sugar, broiled pears with gorgonzola and caramelized oranges on the side. Oh my jeans are getting tight.
grapefruit broiled with maple syrup is the best, and grapefruit juice - fresh squeezed - with a dab of maple syrup is even better.
this is actually the only way i will eat grapefruit (which i otherwise find to be bitter and gross). my mom used to do it when i was growing up, with plain white sugar (i think the sugar went on before it went under the broiler?).
Learned to make this in Girl Scouts many years ago, broiled with sugar on top...and a maraschino cherry!
yum. all these ideas sound delightful; gotta run to the grocery store for some grapefruit now...
It's even better New England style! Sprinkle some granola and a bit of brown sugar on top before you broil it for 10 minutes.
Mmm. I love broiled grapefruit - I usually make it with brown sugar and grated fresh ginger.
I had never heard of delicious sounding coconut sugar

Thanks culinaryclueness. Will get some
i've been wanting to try this method. alton brown did something similar on an episode of good eats about salt... of course he brûléed it with a small torch.
his advice was using a bit of salt with the sugar helped tame the bitterness of the grapefruit without having to use a lot of sugar.
