When a friend of mine was discussing appetite with her new Dutch beau, he told her, "I was much hungrier as a boy — I could eat ten strawberry sandwiches in one sitting!" Wait, rewind, she said. Strawberry sandwiches?
He told her in Holland, strawberry sandwiches are eaten as a snack, made with just bread, strawberries and sugar. He used to pulverize strawberries in a blender with a lot of sugar, then spread them on a slice of bread, but the sandwiches can also be made with slices of the fruit and a much less kid-friendly amount of sugar.
I recreated this Dutch treat with a slice of good country-style white bread, a handful of sliced strawberries and a sprinkling of sugar. It has a distinct strawberry shortcake vibe, but is less sweet and feels more like a snack than a dessert. Strawberry sandwiches would make a lovely, light addition to a brunch spread or even a casual weekday dessert. I don't think I could eat ten of them though!
Have you ever tried a strawberry sandwich?

Yes! I slice strawberries on toast with cream cheese and also on a peanut butter sandwich.
My favorite breakfast lately has been toast spread with Nutella and topped with sliced strawberries!
yes! japanese people eat these, although they ante up things a bit by adding SLIGHTLY sweetened whipped cream.
can be strawberries alone on shokupan but more often than not they add multiple fruit (standard mix is fresh strawberry, fresh kiwi, CANNED peaches and bananas) for a prettier color combination.
do a search for "fruit sandwich" or ”フルーツサンド” : http://bit.ly/ndxmsL
I love dutch sandwiches. My grandma used to make us hagelslag sandwiches. Essentially chocolate sprinkles, butter, bread...maybe a little sprinkling of sugar if we were good.
I eat my fair share of strawberry and nutella sandwiches, mmm
Yes, my mum was a fan & fed them to us in summertime. We also ate apple sandwiches and orange ones with the big oranges sliced up in January. A sprinkle of sugar's all they need & it's marvellous. Banana sandwiches are good too, but I think everyone knows that already!
I was just about to say that I bet the berries would adhere especially well to the bread with a little smear of nutella.
Yes. With cream cheese. Sometimes on a Bagel if I'm feeling froggy.
I make peanut butter and strawberries - just like peanut butter and strawberry jam!
Strawberries with sugar on a warm biscuit. This was a Sunday evening treat in Alabama. :P
I live in the Netherlands where this is the norm...strawberries are also eaten on beschuit, a round rusk cracker spead with butter...i prefer jam! Strawberries are rather messy and slip off!
Sounds delish! Definitely will try.
I like to spread slightly sweetened cream cheese on pumpkin bread then top with sliced strawberries and another slice of pumpkin bread. So yummy and cute!
have you ever put strawberries on a grilled cheese sandwich? with the right kind of cheese it's heaven.

For the 2-3 weeks strawberrie are in season in Seattle, I practically live off toasted English muffins topped with a little cream cheese, sliced strawberries and a sprinkle of brown sugar - perfect light breakfast or snack!
Growing up with a mother from the Netherlands, we would have the beschuit also, except with butter and sugar, or buttered toast with those De Ruijter sprinkles. Yum!
uhhhh jam on toast? Yes I've eaten that. :D
But strawberries aren't in season anymore... :-( That window is really WAY too short.
My dad made me this as a kid, but different: make buttered toast, de-stem VERY ripe strawberries, and mash the berries onto the toast with a fork. No sugar needed!
My Grandma is German and she would make grilled cream cheese sammies with honey and strawberries- so good!
I live in Norway, very common here!
This sounds delicious! But, am I the only one who gets a little dizzy looking at this picture? :) I feel like it is upside down haha! Crazy perception :)
My favorite is condensed milk spread on toast, topped with strawberries!
We have use Ginger Cookies spread cream cheese top with slice strawberries great combination
I do the same as strawberia, strawberries and nutella. It's made me the favorite aunt with some picky eaters.
I will need to try sunrei's version with condensed milk.
My 2 year old invented the open rye bread with nutella and carefully constructed rows of blueberries on top. An absolutely fantastic combination and now a favourite in our house
I love rice cakes with cream cheese and sliced strawberries. Crunchy, creamy and sweet all at the same time.
I think I'd like this with slices of pound cake.
Yes, please! My adopted Oma made these for us after school, and they were right up there with Nutella and HAGELSLAG, which I'm seeing everywhere lately and craving something fierce.
Lately I've been eating what I call "savory strawberry salad sandwiches:" sliced strawberries, spinach, and feta cheese on bread with a little mayo (this was born out of one of those "only-odds-and-ends-in-the-fridge-so-why-not-just-throw-it-all-together" days). Also delish with sliced nectarine.
Yes, of course! During summer, it is very normal to eat a slice of freshly baked bread with a generous layer of butter, slices of locally grown sweet summer strawberries, and then sprinkle it with sugar, here in Norway where I am from. It's the perfect summer snack!
I eat this for breakfast in the summer all the time, only I skip the sugar, use peanut butter instead of butter, and toast the bread. Mmmm...
Brought to you by the wonderful people who also put whipped cream on top of their ice cream cones.
I definitely ate these growing up, being of Dutch descent. We did butter & strawberries; no sugar needed. My then-boyfriend (now husband) was entirely freaked out when my grandma offered to make us some sandwiches and walked out with those!
I also grew up with the hagelslag (chocolate sprinkle) sandwiches for lunch or on toast for dinner. Seriously. Being a Dutch kid is the best. Especially when you get the fun marshmallows, chocolate letters at Christmas, and fruitellas. And when everyone opens their roll of Kings peppermints at church as the sermon starts - got to stay awake! The only thing I didn't go for are the droppies (salted black licorice). Yuck.
I grew up in West Michigan, where there are a lot of people of Dutch descent. I haven't heard of strawberry sandwiches, but it reminds me of the white bread, butter, and chocolate sprinkles thing everyone used to eat. Although, I think everyone usually used Country Crock rather than butter. It was the Midwest, after all :)

I eat a strawberry and peanut butter sandwich every day for lunch during strawberry season...I call it my "grown up PBJ" sandwich at work!
