You might be familiar with cardamom in baked goods or tea (think masala chai), but have you ever had cardamom-infused coffee?
This warm, fragrant beverage is especially popular in the Middle East, where cardamom seeds are often ground with coffee beans. Others add whole cardamom pods or even pre-ground cardamom powder to the brew.
We recommend starting with one crushed cardamom pod per cup of coffee, and later adjusting the amount to your taste. You can add the spice to the coffee grounds in a drip machine, French press, or any method you use to make coffee.

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

I just spent a few days vacationing in Granada, Spain, and this was very common in the teterías (tea/coffee shops). Delicious!
I've added cinnamon and nutmeg to coffee, but never cardamom. It's just so expensive, and I'm too partial to cardamom in shortbread cookies.
Rebecca, you should buy cardamom pods at an international grocery store. They are so cheap that you can use cardamom freely! My husband is Indian so we cook with it or put it in chai daily.
Cardamom coffee called MIRRA in Turkish and is very commun in south-east Turkey.
It's been ages since I put cardamom in coffee. Thanks for the reminder, doing that tomorrow morning! Cinnamon is also nice, as is (my favourite) a few drops of vanilla.
My mom used to make it on special occassions.....considered a delicacy =)
My mom used to make it on special occassions.....considered a delicacy in india =)
I do this at home on occasion - I keep ground cardamom around and sprinkle just a bit into the filter before I grind the beans and it gives the coffee a lovely flavor.
I first got the idea from Philz coffee; their original store is about four blocks from my house in San Francisco and they have two blends that they add cardamom to by default (although you can get it in any coffee they serve). The Philharmonic is one of my favorite coffees they make and the cardamom flavor is a big part of that.
When I lived in Oman, this was quite common at big family dinners or special occasions. It's such a surprising flavor, but so comforting as well.
Cinnamon is good, but you have to get every part of the coffee right to get something really special. Here's my own favourite coffee 'recipe' - http://homefluffyhome.blog.com/2012/11/07/a-latte-look-forward-to/
For the holidays I'll brew cafe de olla, a Mexican flavored coffee with fresh ground coffee, piloncillo and cinnamon. It's great as a gift too!
I often get a "dirty chai" at my local coffee joint-- just a chai w/ a shot of espresso or two. It's delicious but I will have to try adding cardamom to my french press at home, too!
Of course, especially after a meal, since it's supposed to have a reducing affect on flatulence...
I hosted a Casablanca party in March where we all dressed up in 40's era garb and I made all Morroccan dishes. A friend suggested cardamom coffee and its since become a favorite of mine. Boozy apricot pancakes were pretty good too. :-)
Try adding some dried rose petals as the coffee is brewing. The cardamom and rose delight the senses.
I sometimes crack a pod or three of cardamom and throw it in my briki when making Greek coffee.
