Catching up on some Iron Chef episodes, we became totally enraptured by the honey-caramel popcorn with nuts and hot sauce from the "Battle: Honey" episode. What a quick and easy addition with a huge kick! Popcorn can be a blank canvas for just about anything, as we know, but can you see combination this working?
Hot sauce made from red chili peppers has a rather sweet heat, so we can see it mixing in with the caramel quite well. The brightthe hot sauce flavors of would also be pitted against the deeper, almost bitter flavors in the cooked sugar caramel sauce. Yum!
In the episode, the chef shook some hot sauce right into the pot with the sugar being boiled for her caramel sauce. This way it gets evenly distributed throughout the liquid - and later over the popcorn! We're guessing maybe two to three teaspoons of hot sauce for a whole batch of caramel corn should add some nice heat.
We'll be settling in to watch some sports this weekend, and a big batch of this caramel corn sounds like the perfect snack. What do you think?
