We grabbed a taster of this fizzy golden brew at a recent beer tasting and were instantly in love with its zesty, lemony, fruity, and all-around lip-smacking flavor. It’s from Brooklyn Brewery, one of our favorites, and uses a rare variety of Japanese hops called Sorachi Ace. We can’t wait to get our hands on a bottle of our own.
What I remember most about this Belgian-style saison is the way it filled every corner of my mouth with sparkling fruit flavors, not unlike very dry champagne. The lemon was at the forefront, but think fresh lemon curd instead of lemonade. Hints of green apple, sweet-tart pineapple, and orange juice added intrigue, along with some typical saison earthy funk. The finish was all lemongrass, whistle clean.
After working my way around a room of beers, sipping this one was a refreshing, head-clearing, palate-cleansing surprise. I’d like to try pairing it with a meal of grilled fish or steamed mussels in a spicy broth.
