Tortilla soup is one of my absolute favorite things to eat when I'm feeling a bit under the weather — which just so happens to be right now. The combination of the fresh ingredients, shredded meat and just the right amount of heat is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Some recipes call for chicken while others prefer turkey — there's no right or wrong and the flavor can be so similar you might not even notice the difference! It seems as though any lover of tortilla soup has their own spin ranging from adding butternut squash, corn or even tequila!

Looks delish! Is it me, or are the main photos from The Kitchn/ AT/ oh dee oh not coming up in Google Reader anymore? Major bummer if that's a permanent change!
Leah H, I have noticed it too and it is definitely a major bummer!
I totally agree. Whenever my husband or I are sick, we prefer homemade tortilla soup. And if I've done a good job prepping the pantry, I'm able to make it with homemade chicken stock too--ups the health factor! I also tend to make it a little spicier to help with decongestion and get the nose running.
Oh I love tortilla soup! I haven't made it for a while, I will definitely be seeking out the ingredients soon to prepare a batch. thanks for the inspiration!
Leah H, me too!
I have noticed that some pictures from The Kitchn not showing up in my Google Reader feed as well. I think it's quite a shame, and hopefully it's just a little quirk with the new design that will be fixed.
Also, I LOVE tortilla soup. Especially this time of year.

Here is another good one: http://sweetsoutherncomfort.com/2011/12/11/sunday-supper-low-sodium-chicken-tortilla-soup/. It's low sodium too!
I have a variation which includes a fresh, diced jalapeno pepper and 2 teaspoons of lemon pepper to add some more zing. The recipe I use also calls for sauteeing finely diced carrots and celery, and for a heartier soup: adding a few tablespoons of flour as you sautee the chicken. This will help thicken the soup before eating and overnight before you reheat (for breakfast usually) the next day.
I despise tortilla soup that is too runny - like watery tomato soup with chicken and chili powder, no thank you.
Tortilla soup for all!!
Here is a version that is perfect for a crazy scheduled family looking for yummy goodness

I haven't even heard of tortilla soup, but will be looking at how to make it pronto. Sounds wonderful and warming.
