For coffee fiends, an average cup of home brewed joe just won't do. If you've become a little too reliant on the skills of your neighborhood barista, you may want to look at Tonx Coffee, a new subscription service coffee company based in Los Angeles. Founders Tony Konecny, a former head roaster at Seattle's Victrola Coffee Roasters, and Nik Bauman, co-founder of Foodzie.com, believe it's possible to make the perfect cup of coffee at home; all you need are the right beans. To that end Tonx offers one small, supremely fresh batch of whole coffee beans at a time, shipped to your doorstep every two weeks.
The company's subscription service is very simple: for $38 a month get a 12 ounce bag of beans delivered to your home every two weeks. Pricey? Yes, but if you want the very best coffee beans can offer, the guys behind Tonx promise they have it. As Konecny told the LA Weekly in this interview, they promise to "nail the roasting" and are working on "putting out a product so good that if you like coffee, 99% of the time, you should like what we're shipping." Their company description pretty much says it all:
Tonx wants you to drink good coffee. We are a small team of coffee fanatics dedicated to becoming your best option for getting the best beans for brewing at your home, your office, or your batcave (if you are Batman). We think coffee can and should be both great and approachable. We sweat the fussy details so that you don't have to. We aim to always be delightful in your press, aero, cone, chemex, hario, or clever coffee making device.

I'm not sure I want to pay $25/lb for my coffee, even if it's good.
^ha then you really don't want good coffee, delivered to your door, roasted within days of shipping and good.
I have had a subscription since the beginning. I have yet to be disappointed with a shipment; the roast is always fantastic, the shipping is prompt and communication is great. The thought that I can pause my subscription at anytime is great. I don't need to stand in line at a coffee bar and wait to buy a bag of something that may have been roasted weeks ago. Tonx roasts within days of shipping.
I'd highly recommend a subscription to anyone that enjoys good coffee. I have yet to turn anyone on to a subscription that has regretted their decision. Try it, you'll like it.
Ever since I saw that my mother's K-cups run about $55/pound, $25 sounds like a bargain of the first order! Also, what a great gift idea for somebody...and by somebody, I mean me.
What I'd love is for any of these delivery services to create a package for people who don't need $40 worth of beans a month. I may be the exception but I get all you can drink coffee at work (beans from a local small roaster) so I only need to make coffee on weekends and some weeknights. I simply don't need that much coffee or coffee at that price. Send me a half pound bag every two weeks or something.
I'm a coffee snob, but I'm going to look for local solutions before having beans shipped to me so regularly.
I live in Southern California and love the fact that the freshly roasted beans are delivered to my work door, with attractive packaging, a little note on Tonx and coffee but within days of the actual roasting. The fact that it is a bag every 2 weeks rather than 2 bags once a month makes my (every other) week. Oh yeah, and its awesome! They really care about coffee, I cannot say enough good things. I love that each bi-week its a different coffee and always roasted perfectly. It may seem a lot of money but work out what you spend on k-cups, StarCraps and it makes sense - to your door. Obviously I am memeber and love it but if you want to give it a go, use this code to sign up to Tonx and save $10 and get me a free t-shirt. I'm naked having spent all my money on Tonx coffee: https://tonx.org/e600c0b5
