Giveaway: 5 instant-read meat thermometers from The Beef Checkoff
Where would grilling be without an instant-read thermometer? Admit it - most of us aren't used to cooking meat over an open fire or hot coals, and our sense of timing is a little thrown off. It's always helpful to have a meat thermometer, whether you're cooking inside or out, but we find absolutely necessary when grilling.
Today the Beef Board and their $1 Beef Checkoff are giving us five meat thermometers for five readers and their grilling efforts. Read on to see how you can win one!
The Beef Checkoff is an information drive to help consumers cook their beef to a safe and healthy temperature. You can check their site for info on cooking beef, including cooking videos and thermometer tips.
This thermometer is a specially branded Beef Checkoff meat thermometer, so we don't have any retail options for you to buy it. But we do have some good suggestions for similar thermometers:
• OXO Good Grips Analog Instant Read Meat Thermometer - Our contacts at the Beef Board say that in their opinion, this is the best analog choice because it has a large, easily readable display.
• Polder Kitchen Thermometer
• Taylor Connoisseur Series Digital Instant Read Meat Thermometer
Do you have a favorite instant read thermometer? Also check out our post on how to sanitize an instant-read thermometer.
TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY: What would you like to grill with this new thermometer? Type a comment in the comment section below by 8:59pm PT/11:59 EST Sunday, July 20, 2008. The five winners will be selected at random. Good luck!

I would like to grill a pork tenderloin. They are great for the summer but I am always a little weary of pork on a grill because I never know if it's at the correct temp.
My boyfriend was just talking about how badly we need one of these...
Pick me! Please! I have been eyeing these things for a while now and never got around to ordering them.
Well, my husband is the griller in this family (I prep the food), and he has a tendency to either undercook or overcook my steak ... SO, I would like him to make me a true MEDIUM-RARE steak. Yum.
This would be great to grill any meat. My husband always thinks he is "helping" me when he insists on grilling our meat. However, I get called outside many times to answer the age old question "Is it ready yet?" Sometimes he even removes everything from the grill, brings it inside and asks if it is done.
He can't seem to grasp the touch test for doneness, so this thermometer would solve the problem. When he grills, I would actually get a night off where I don't do the cooking.
My current thermometer takes too long to read the temperature :(
I do need a thermometer desperately, and I'd use it on the grill along with anything pork - my true BBQ love :)
I would like to grill the rabbit I have sitting in my freezer... and the duck... and the durian.... yes. I need this!
Any large piece of meat (easy to be unsure of doneness on the grill...)
I'd like to grill me up some elk steaks. Uh, anyone know what temperature elk is done at?
~Q
This would be great for using with our stovetop smoker ... mmmmmm slow-smoked ribs at the perfect temperature ... drool!
I'll grill up a tri-tip.
I have some nice buffalo steaks fresh from a local farm that I am sure would not mind a poke or two with a meat thermometer. Top it off with some foil-wrapped onions and portobellos. Hmmmm. Second thought, I am not sure I can wait on a thermometer... ;)
Of all the cooking gadgets in my arsenal, surprisingly, no meat thermometer...
My wife really needs one.
ribeye... mmm

I don't eat steaks very often, but I'll have access to an outdoor grill when I go housesitting for the month of August. I'm really looking forward to cooking my own steak on the grill, all marinated in red wine and soy sauce.
I'd love to win one - mine is SO old!! I inherited it from my Mom...
I'd use it mostly for chicken and pork as I find them harder to "tell" if they are done...
I'd use it for turkey on the grill
Grilled chicken..yum
I have an huge (about 2.5 lb) sirloin in my freezer, which I am definitely planning to grill. A thermometer would be pretty useful in figuring out exactly how done this big hunk of meat is - I don't have much experience grilling anything bigger than a pork chop.

Chicken! Yummy.
