Gift: 2 sets of Eiko Egg Boilers from Vessel
Designer: Eiko
Shop: Available from Vessel for $19 per set of four.
Remember these Eiko Egg Boilers from last week? We like their bright, cheery spring colors and how they gently cradle your eggs as they cook to soft-boiled perfection. They perform double duty as egg cups as you dip your toast soldiers into the golden innards.
Soft-boiled eggs always remind us of one of our favorite children's book heroines: a small badger named Frances...
Here's a short excerpt from Russell Hoban's classic Bread and Jam for Frances. The family is sitting down to breakfast, each with an egg. Frances, however, is going through a picky eater phase.
"What a lovely egg!" said Father.
"If there is one thing I am fond of for breakfast, it is a soft-boiled egg."
"Yes," said Mother, spooning up egg for the baby, "it is just the thing to start the day off right."
"Ah!" said Gloria, and ate up her egg.
Frances did not eat her egg.
She sang a little song to it."I do not like the way you slide,
I do not like your soft inside,
I do not like you lots of ways,
And I could do for many days
Without eggs."
We have to disagree with Frances - we could not go for many days without eggs! Fortunately the bread-and-jam eating heroine comes around to how good other foods are, and she winds up eating much more than bread and jam. (Want to read the whole thing? Buy Bread and Jam for Frances, $6.99 at Amazon.)
Back to our giveaway! If you are like Frances' family and want to start your day out right with a soft-boiled egg, check out these Egg Boilers. Also, you can see more from our March Hungry Reader food and literature theme here.

Scrambled with kosher salt, a fair share of pepper and a bit of cheese (and sometimes ketchup on top, eek! It freaks my boyfriend out).
I loove soft-boiled eggs with runny insides! Reminds me of when my mom used to cook for me. A little bit of kosher salt on top is all I need. yum!
OOh i loved this book! I always wondered what a soft boiled egg was, and still have not made one. I usually scramble, but I think I'm gonna poach this morning!
Hard boiled with a pinch of salt.
hard boiled
Either scrambled, also with ketchup (!) or poached on top of, well, almost anything. As spring is on the horizon I'm thinking of asparagus.....
I love hard boiled. Have never tried a soft boiled egg but I bet its wonderful. Oh yes and I LOVE Ketchup on eggs, if you havn't tried it, you're missing out.
soft-boiled eggs with runny insides or poached (still runny inside) with Japanese sauce.
i love soft-boiled eggs! It's the only way to eat them. Soft-boiled with a pinch of sea salt and toast to mop it all up.
poached with just set inside (oddly enough, 4 min 20 seconds seems to be perfect); on toast with spinach, tomato, and dairy-free hollandaise sauce
poached!
I like mine over-easy. If done right, the whites should be cooked but the yolk runny.
I prefer hard boiled.
I'd PREFER soft boiled, if - that is - I can get VERY fresh eggs. That means, since I'm stuck with a big box store, I eat them hardboiled.
I agree w/ Sarah M. for fresh eggs, soft boil is a must. but alas I don't get them very often so hardboiled it is.
Soft-boiled and still warm...if I had one of these, I'd probably make myself an egg every morning!
I love hard-boiled eggs, deviled eggs, and fried egg/bagel sandwiches! ;)
i love dunkable, runny soft-boiled eggs. I lop the top off, place them in egg cups, and serve them with an arrangement of condiments - steamed asparagus spears, brazen hunks of bread, and a modest mound of sea salt. it's like a breakfast (or snacktime) "fondue."
I adore my eggs baked! My roommate and I are planning to start a cafe called Bread and Jam for Frances (copyrights pending), that serves all the foods alluded to in children's books, especially those that we never quite knew what they were, like turkish delight.
I love soft boiled, with the tops cut off. I cut the toast into strips and dip it into the egg. Yum!
Boiled to oblivion.
Hard boiled, with a touch of hot sauce. Deviled eggs with lots of paprika.
I loved that book! Now I think I must go and read it again for old time's sake.
Personally, I like my eggs boiled just until the whites have set and the outer rim of the yolk has set, but the yolk is still translucent and not entirely runny nor solid. Mmm... eggs...
I like mine soft boiled or scrambled. But all growing up I thought Frances was a bear! This is revolutionary news. Looking at the picture of Frances now with adult eyes, I can see the badger-ness...
yummy yummy soft and runny!
I loved soft-boiled eggs. I have a variety of egg cups (and egg feet!) for them. Mmm... warm runny egg with buttered toast fingers to dip into the yolk. You just have to make sure you cut the toast fingers skinny enough to fit into the eggshell opening.
oh I love boiled eggs
Poached with runny insides, and lots of kosher salt and cracked black pepper!
Soft boiled is the only way to go :)
Poached! Yum...
My favorite is poached, but I've never been able to make one myself - I have to go home to mom for that. : (
My runner-up is hard boiled, and I perfected my technique from a post on this site.
Medium. It's not hard boiled and it's not runny soft boiled. It's a firm yolk with just a bit of softness in the center. That is heaven right there. :)
I love soft boiled with lots of butter and salt, with toast on the side!
Second only to left-over hard boiled eggs at Easter time!
Hello! My family eats scrambled, and hard egg sandwiches. My 89 year old dad loves soft boiled eggs. These egg goodies would make it very easy for him to cook his eggs!
Thanks very much.....Cindi
I like eggs hard-boiled but with the yolk still yellow, not green. That's why I never make hard-boiled eggs. LOL.
oh my god, soft boiled eggs totally always remind me of that book too! I just made some the other day. my favorite is probably over easy with sourdough toast, however. :)
mmm...soft boiled, with toast points.
preferably in paris.
I love to make hard boiled eggs, but I always crack the shell when I drop them in the pan - this looksl ike a great idea!
rap9r(at)hotmail(dot)com
hard boiled with pico de gallo : )
My mom used to make me soft boiled eggs that were mixed up with cubes of buttered toast. so good, I can still taste it.
Now I'll eat eggs any which way - sunny side up, scrambled, hard boiled, I even want to try pickling eggs (Mark Bittman has a recipe in his new 'How to Cook Everything Vegetarian'). If Mark likes them, they can't be bad... not like those big gallon jars filled with pickled eggs... yuk! :)
Hardboiled on toast. Though I like soft-boiled by itself too :)
Perfectly hardboiled, meaning that it doesn't crack and is cooked all the way through (this doesn't always happen for me), with a little salt and pepper, sliced, on top of lightly buttered sourdough toast, oh, and no yolk, just the white. :)
Honestly, I do not care for eggs UNLESS they are hard boiled (deviled eggs, YUM!).
Hard boiled with some sea salt & freshy ground pepper. Soft boiled with some soy sauce, fresh ground pepper, and toast.
*Very* soft boiled, over wheetabix with a smidge of butter and lots of salt and pepper.
Soft-boiled eggs on buttered toast. Mmmm.
Now that Easter is almost here, of course hard boiled and hand painted! Fun & Yumm.
Hard boiled, with a splash of Louisiana hot sauce!
Soft boiled with salt & pepper, served with buttered toast.
Poached, soft boiled, or soft scrambled, on toast.
As I sit here eating a hard-boiled egg....I love them in every way; fried, poached, scrambled, boiled, baked and eaten.
hard boiled. enjoy taking a few out camping for the initial campsite breakfast.
I like my eggs DEVILED...in the morning, anytime....please help me!
I like my egg soft boiled and served in an egg cup. The best part is decapitating it with a sharp knife point, then dipping little buttered toast soldiers into the gooey center.
Mmm, Soft boiled with lemon pepper
My long time family favorite is toad in the hole with a bit of ketchup
sometimes we make that dinner by putting a bit of tomato sauce and parmesan cheese and putting it under the broiler for a moment.

i love eggs poached and ozzing over roasted asparagus! with crumbled bacon on top!
I love soft-scrambled eggs with creme fraiche--but for these? Soft-boiled. Yum.
This would be helpful. The last time I attempted hard-boiled eggs, I burn the pot (shame was a very nice pot too). This might actually prevent me from doing it again.
Absolutely hard-headed and I like them hard boiled
To pick a favorite, I'd have to say peppers & eggs on some nice, toasted Italian bread. Yum!

Eggs in a cup, two eggs boiled 4 minutes, rinse in cold water take the shell off carefully so egg stays whole, place in a cup or small bowl. Serve with bread and have fun breaking the eggs and eating them over the bread.

I love beautiful yellow yolks from perfect hard-boiled eggs. I was so excited when I figured out how easy it was! Soft-boiled eggs are intimidating to me for some illogical reason, but these would totally get me over that phobia!
I like them soft boiled
For boiled purposes I like hard boiled eggs best, because they are so versatile, but for any type of eggs I like them over easy, with a nice cooked, but runny yolk, perfect for dunking the toast in.
I've actually never had a soft-boiled egg but any day now I'm going to try one! My current fave way to eat eggs is over-easy on a piece of toast with some hot sauce and black pepper- yum!!

The only eggs I knew as a child were either scrambled to bits, fried to a crisp, or hard-boiled until the yolk was green. Bleah! When I began cooking for myself, I discovered the wonder that is the egg. Here are just a few of my favorite creations:
Gently scrambled with spinach, swiss cheese, and tomato.

These look really neat.
My mother used to make hard-boiled eggs sandwiches. She would cut a slice of plain white bread into quarters and put a pat of butter in the middle of each quarter. Then she would peel hard-boiled eggs, straight out of the pot, cut them in half length-wise, sprinkle w/salt and pepper, then place a half, cut side down, on each quarter of bread, right on top of the butter. We had to eat them in two bites, butter running all over the place, and almost burning our mouths. They are the ultimate comfort food.
Poached, on toast with a little hot sauce. Or fried in butter, but what isn't good fried in butter?
without a doubt poached!
