It’s a bit of a puzzle, but for some reason wall mounted dish racks are hard to find here in the US, despite the fact that they are very common in Europe and in Great Britain in particular. Perhaps our lack of exposure to this clever and attractive way to store dishes has kept demand down? With open-shelved kitchens all the rage right now, this might just be the moment for us to wise up. Luckily, a few forward-thinking shop owners have us covered with three very different approaches to the wall mounted dish rack.

Being a Yank, I’m not 100% certain but I believe that the purpose of the wall mounted dish rack was to provide a place for everyday dishes to drain after they’ve been hand washed. This is why you’ll often find wall mounted dish racks located above a sink. But they can also function strictly as storage, especially now that many homes have dishwashers, and so you can also find them located in other areas of the kitchen.

Wall mounted dish racks can vary in size and shape, but in general they offer slotted compartments to hold plates upright and often have an area or hooks for cups. They are usually made out of wood but stainless steel ones (often imported from India) are gaining popularity as well. Here are three very different versions of the wall mounted dish rack, the first two which can be found here in the US.

1. Wall-Mounted Plate Rack, $120 from Etsy seller Nicolet Wood Products: this rack comes in unfinished pine and can be stained or painted to fit your kitchen’s decor. It has an easy to install french cleat hanger but is not for drying (no drainage). Pictured above is the smaller 10-plate model for $120. Many other sizes, including custom orders, are available on the NicoletWoodProducts shop page.

2. Plate Rack, $145-$165 from Ancient Industries: this wooden rack is beech with birch dowels and coated with a water-resistant teak oil. It comes with mounting screws and can be used as a drying rack as well as storage. The small size is $145 and the large is $165.

3. Stainless Steel Rack, £125.00 from The Plate Rack: this stainless steel rack is from India but they will ship internationally. Currently selling for £125, this is some of the best pricing I’ve seen on this style, which is very popular but hard to get here. (You can purchase similar versions for as much as $600!)
