When you need a satisfying snack to fuel you through the afternoon slump or help you recover from an intense workout, what do you reach for? My guess is some sort of sweet bar with dried fruit, nuts, and oats. And while granola bars are great, sometimes you've just got to switch things up — take a walk on the savory side with these homemade power bars. You won't regret it.

There are a few familiar players here, like rolled oats, crisp brown rice cereal, coconut oil, toasted walnuts, and brown rice syrup, but thanks to off-the-beaten-path ingredients like crumbled kale chips, oil-cured olives, and pinches of saffron and dried chile flakes, these are definitely not your mother's granola bars.

Striking the perfect balance between crunchy, sweet, salty, and spicy, these power bars are a unique departure from your typically ho-hum snack choices.
