Word of Mouth: Gianduja

2009-09-28-Gianduja.jpgGianduja (jhe-yan doo yah), noun - A smooth spread made of chocolate and ground hazelnuts, from the Piedmont region in Italy. (Variation: Gianduia)

Before Nutella, there was gianduja! Do you love this nutty chocolate butter as much as we do?

We'd be happy eating a spoonful of gianduja straight from the jar, but it's just as much a treat to spread it on a piece of toast, a croissant, or - luxuries of luxuries - warm baguette. We associated it with relaxed weekend breakfasts, the kind where you sit for hours with a bottomless cup of coffee and the weekend crossword. We also associate it with afternoon snacks furtively eaten before anyone realizes what we're doing and asks for a bite!

If we can restrain ourselves from eating it straight, gianduja is an excellent ingredient to have around for baking. You can definitely make it yourself, and it keeps in the fridge just like peanut butter. You can thin it with a little cream to make a nice ganache or use it to sandwich cookies together. We've had gianduja mousse and gianduja gelato before, and watch out for dangerously addictive gianduja truffles (which are really just another excuse to eat it plain, right?!).

Instead of chocolate rice pudding with gianduja whipped cream, I just make a simple 10 min. stovetop rice pudding when I have a sweet tooth and just mix in a couple of TB. of Nutella or other chocolate hazelnut spread (TJ's has one...). Mmmmm.

I recently saw a commercial for Nutella. It sorta caught me off guard. They billed it as a "healthy" breakfast item, made with hazelnuts, skim milk and "just a touch of cocoa." That gave me pause. While I love Nutella as much as, well, anything, it doesn't strike me as very healthy. And I could be wrong, but it also seems to have a lot more than just a hint of chocolate.

haha: that's even harder to pronounce than Nutella ;)
I was very happy to find out a while ago that Nutella actually is a bit more nutricious than peanut butter. Who would have thunk?

I love making a Nutella sandwich with white bread, Nutella, thinly sliced Granny Smith apples and toasted walnuts or pecans. Or just eating it out of the jar with a spoon (something I don't do often).

It doesn't get much better than gianduia gelato - they sell it at most respectable gelaterias...

And YES that ad is so funny! I never thought of Nutella as health food. I would eat a fine hot dinner of shoes...were it swathed in Nutella!

:)

Oh, hyperRevue, my husband and I always crack up at that commercial and the "just a hint of cocoa" part! The last time I checked, Nutella was indeed a big ol' jar of chocolate.

Also, I love how the mom says that she uses it to get her children to eat "all sorts of healthy foods". Like, apparently, bread....

I was thrilled when I saw that commercial, finally, FINALLY, someone told me what I wanted to hear! Elation!

Of course, it reminds me of the time my nephew didn't want to brush his teeth and told me chewing a particular gum was even better than brushing your teeth, but still I'm embracing my Nutella-fueled denial all the way (though I do prefer homemade so I can control the amount and type of sugar).

All I needed to do this morning was see the photo - now I'm salivating and trying to figure out where to get a gianduja fix.

ha! So glad I wasn't the only one who thought that commercial was ridiculous/funny.

I just looked up the nutritional info - made mostly of sugar and oil (Palm for the US version) soooo I guess that is healthier than eating, um....yeah can't think of anything worse.

I love it spread on a crispy piece of toast with coffee for breakfast. But not Nutella- the real Gianduja, which I also like to refer as liquid gold. mmmm…

OK, now I can blame my nasty habit of scooping Nutella out of the jar with walnuts on my ethnic heritage (I'm Piedmontese). And I can justify getting the real stuff. And I will shoot a commercial about how damn HEALTHY it is! There are worse things, alexis, honestly! Imagine eating straight diesel fuel. Sugar, fat, hazelnuts, and cocoa are much, much better for you than THAT.

Nutella: healthier than diesel fuel.

I like it.

Until recently Nutella in the US was made with partially hydrogenated oil. How about a nice tablespoon full of chocolate flavored Crisco. I don't trust any company that would have the nerve to tell me that the stuff they sell me is healthy when they were ready to kill me before.

Those Nutella ads do rub me the wrong way. Feed your children real food on a regular basis and they won't demand a breakfast besmeared with sugary goo. That said, sugar does have its place. David Lebovitz has a wonderful recipe for Gianduja ice cream that we made about a month ago. I should break it out again, great fall flavor!
