Fridge Shot: Citrus Cravings

2007_01_12-Citrus.jpg

This is an entire drawer in my fridge, given over to tiny clementines, sweet tangerines, and Ruby Red grapefruit. I had the most complete craving for juicy citrus this week, and I brought home a whole bag and filled up the drawer. Perhaps my appetite knows, subliminally, that cold season is in full swing.

What sort of winter cravings do you get? What's in your fridge right now?

Oddly enough, I have been craving cucumbers and vinegar... usually a summertime treat for me.

I don't know what it is but I have been eating an insane amount of sauteed spinach with garlic lately. The other day it was brie with bread and wine, and then mac and cheese and a big green salad.

Not too much in my fridge today...I'm on my way to the grocery store!

I have been buying a box of clementines each week that the two of us just devour. I can't get enough of them!

My fridge is full of lots and lots of malt liquor, like Mike's Hard Lime and Lemonade. I guess that's how I deals with citrus cravings.

Tomatoes. And pickles. I have boxes of Pomis all over the top shelf and about 7 different kinds of pickles; snap peas, asparagus, dilly beans, pears, cukes, cornichons and capers. Oh, and lots of olives. I guess I'm having a combo lycopene and salt deficiency ;-)

mountains of spinach, in and next to everything

I've had terrible luck with oranges this year -- is it a substandard citrus year? I'm waiting for the Temples, in a few weeks...

I'd try Tamara's method but I think it'll have to be Lillet.

I spent Christmas in Ireland, where they happily serve three potato dishes, roasted, boiled and mashed, in one meal. I thought this was myth but my MIL proved me wrong. Despite a week of potato overload, or maybe because of it, I am craving potatoes. They are very satisfing as the weather has finally gotten colder.

a whole poached chicken, white meat for sandwiches with chutney, gratin with the dark meat, and lots of nice broth for soups with assorted vegetables the rest of the week when I don't have time to cook! But I must get to the store now to buy my chicken.

I've been craving grape tomatos, avocados, vidalia onions. Fruits such as pineapples and bananas. And right now salmon smothered w/garlic, roasted sweet peppers, and lemon juice. With a side of /roasted red potatoes and green peas. Tomorrow night we'll be experiencing an arctic plunge in temps. that could be the sudden crave. Time to check the cupboards.

This will make it sound like I've been struggling through bracing winter weather and am fantasizing about the beach (despite the fact that it's been out right balmy in Pittsburgh), but I've been craving gin and tonics and mango salsa. Maybe once the winter weather hits, I'll look forward to braised lamb shanks and italian pork butt, but, until then, these poor chaps are just taking on freezer burn.

ha-ha, Sarah Miller! I've been drinking Cape Codders and G&Ts all "winter" (in Mass.) But today--finally--it's cold. Glad I bought that bottle of Dewar's last weekend!
