What's Cooking This Weekend?
Weekend of June 7-8, 2008

2008_6_06-Cooking.jpgIt suddenly got hot - way too hot for our tastes - so while we're hard at work testing some new recipes this weekend, we are going to be doing that with a glass of something cool near to hand. Here are some of our favorite recipes from the last week, and a little weekend reading too. (Did you see that new kitchen tour yet?)

What's Cooking at The Kitchn
• NEW tour: Kitchen Tour: Robert and Elizabeth's Soulful Sterling Place

• Definitely need something cool to drink this weekend - try cocktails with rose, or pick from our massive list of summer cocktails.

• Several new recipes we want to try this week, starting with no-bake Sunflower Date Cookies.

• We are also liking the look of that roasted beet and barley salad and this raw artichoke and mushroom salad with Parmesan.

• Treasures from Martha Stewart Crafts - the bottle magnet is too cute.

• Tell us - what are your recipe deal breakers?

• Discuss the finale, part 1, of Top Chef here.

• We're in love with this tea towel.

• And gardeners! What is this plant?

• Thinking about a bottle of chilled Lambrusco - what are you drinking this weekend?

clafouti, for sure, as it is cherry season here... and I am pondering whether I am brave enough to make rabbit with green olives, out of Patricia Wells' Bistro cookbook...

I think we might try to grill a pizza for the first time. I've always been nervous about doing it on charcoal, but there's no way in hell I'm turning on the oven.

It's still a bit nippy and wet here in Vancouver, so no fear of turning on the oven. Alas. We made quesadillas (yum) tonight. Tomorrow night we're making coconut-crusted shrimp and hoping that a tropical meal attracts warmer weather.

I just finished eating the breakfast pizza I put together this morning from the AT recipe: ricotta, prosciutto, herbs, eggs, and a smattering of leftover pecorino. Delicious.
The boyfriend was almost in awe that someone could put together a fancy breakfast pizza in under 30 minutes total, incl. the dough- way to boost my status as a cook, AT!

cakekick, grilling pizza is great! I always make individual ones because they're easier to deal with on the grill, and make sure you've got a hot zone and a cooler zone, and you'll be good to go.

Summer? What summer? I'm still thinking soups and braises and hearty potato dishes. So tomorrow is potato skillet pie from Deborah Madison's Vegetarian Suppers. Lettuce is the only thing growing in the garden, so we'll have a side salad and some crusty bread to go with.

French toast for breakfast tomorrow; I've got challah in the freezer I saved just for that purpose...

Ugh, yesterday was NOT a good day to do what we'd planned: eight people for brunch, a double recipe of Marc Meyer's lemon-ricotta pancakes and a goat-cheese-dinosaur-kale strata which had to bake...to make matters worse, one of the guests was an hour late and I kept the strata in the oven too long....Since it's ok cold, i should have just taken it out instead of drying it out in the oven....
And our air conditioner seems to be out of coolant...

Pizza on whole wheat pita - carmelized red onion, hunks of roasted garlic, mushrooms, orange sweet pepper, old Cheddar. Now cherries for a snack.

Trying to find some no cook recipes... I wish I'd made some whole grain salads before it got hot. I suppose I still could, but that would involve me going outside into the sauna and walking to the store, which is pretty unappealing at the moment.

I got lucky and it was pleasant without being hot here this weekend. Saturday morning started with a trip to the grocery store for lemons and butter and eggs and continued on with a cake to be baked, lemon curd to be made and a chicken to roast. My guests showed up at noon and we didn't leave the table for hours. It was soothing and delightful for me to have company and feed people. I can only hope they enjoyed it, too.
