What Foods or Drinks Do You Wish You Liked More?

2009_08_10-FoodsToLikeMore.jpgI've proven that I'm not a picky eater, but there are some foods that I don't like, and wish that I did. In some cases, I wish I liked them because they are nutritious, and in other cases I wish I liked them because they look interesting.

I've never been a big fan of sweet potatoes and yams. I've tried to like them, and I've tasted them in many different forms, but my tastebuds just don't like them. It's a shame, because they're loaded with so many nutrients. I'm also not a fan of coffee, which is probably a good thing as I don't have to deal with caffeine cravings and withdrawals! I kind of wish I liked it, because it seems to be such a big part of our culture.

What about you? Which foods or drinks do you wish you liked more?

Same for me with sweet potatoes--add winter squash to that, too. I just don't like the sweet flavor! I can eat them if they are cubed, highly spiced, and roasted.

Seafood is another I wish I liked. I cannot stand shellfish, unless it's straight out of the ocean--as in, I caught it ten minutes ago, and now I'm going to eat it.

Cucumbers, eggplant, and arugula. I find them tolerable, but I wouldn't buy them unless I was really excited about a recipe that called for them.

Raw tomatoes usually (it's a texture thing), green peppers because they're everywhere, fennel (I'm trying, I really am), oranges (again, texture). I also wish I had a higher tolerance for spicy foods, but I'm not sure there's a real way around that one.

@Madame Is - first, make sure your quinoa has been rinsed; but have you tried toasting it before cooking?

They're so healthy, yet so inedible.

It's not that I don't like certain foods,it's that they don't like me. I love the flavor of some things but they make stomach ache or cause nasty headaches so i can't eat them. Asparagus is a good example. I can't see forcing myself to eat something just because of societal pressures. It's an unhealthy idea.

Fish! I'm getting better about it, but it's still never my first choice.

I was a notoriously picky eater as a child... I didn't like onions, tomatoes, celery, olives, or sweet potatoes, and I've since successfully taught myself to like all of them.

I still loath mushrooms, but I'm perfectly comfortable with my prejudice against them ;-)

i wish i liked everything really. i don't think of myself as a picky eater, but there are some key ingredients that i really don't like (cilantro, ginger, fennel) that seem to be in lots of food. as a result there are whole cuisines that i tend to avoid because of those prominent flavors. vietnamese anyone?
i also don't like coffee, can't even stand the smell, and i wish i at least sort of liked it. it would be nice to understand what everyone else loves so much!

I'm surprised by how many people dislike tomatoes, didn't realize it was that widespread. I never liked them when I was young, but once I was old enough to start fixing them myself and remove all that nasty, slimy seed filled goo, I found that I quite like the taste of the fruit itself.

I wish I liked eggs, because not liking them really limits your choices at brunch.

[Items containing egg such as French toast, pancakes, any cake or cookie = okay. Eggs on their own (hard boiled, fried, scrambled, poached) or dominating a dish (frittata, quiche, strata) = not okay.]

I'm also in the raw tomato chorus.

I am right there with the raw tomatoes thing. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. I grow the heck out of them and then either give them away (I make a wonderful neighbor) or make them into a sauce (which I then give most of it away anyways!).

I think it's a texture and an acidity thing with me.

Mushrooms, blue cheese, and poached, fried, or baked eggs. The egg situation is a little weird--I love scrambled eggs, omelets, quiches and stratas, but unless the egg is mixed to be uniformly yellow in color, it turns my stomach to even think about eating it. The only exceptions are cold eggs--hard-boiled preparations.

In the last 5 years or so I've begun to really enjoy: raw tomatoes, mushrooms, olives, many varieties of cheese beyond cheddar/parm/mozz, beets, red meat and I'm sure there are others. Most of this was due to exposure by my boyfriend who is a great cook and I didn't want to seem like a baby when he made something that contained one of the above, or I was eating w/ his family as I got to know them. I found myself being pleasantly surprised again and again so now I'm willing to "re-try" many foods that I once disliked. However I still haven't been able to fully embrace stinky ripe cheeses, blue cheese, and lamb. But I'm not giving up hope that I'll like them some day :)

My first gut reaction is to agree with eprewitt: as a former vegetarian and current (medically required) low sodium eater, I really wish I liked melons of any sort, but no matter how often I try them, they taste like styrofoam soaked in weak juice. Even watermelon, which can be big around here this time of year.

I love raw tomatoes and always have, provided the tomatoes are local and ripe. I use canned tomatoes in cooking rather than the supermarket varieties that Alton Brown once quipped are "strip-mined in Texas." When tomato season is over, I stop eating fresh tomatoes in things like caprese salad. Cherry tomatoes are often a good substitute in winter, but they're just not the same.

The food I don't like that others do that's not covered here is one I don't actually wish I liked more, but it still surprises people: pink beef. I'm not a steak eater not because I'm a vegetarian (I have no ethical qualms with being at the top of the food chain, though I believe all animals should be treated as well as possible until their days are over), but because the "juicy" steak is still pink in the middle, and I really don't like pink beef. It gives me this visceral "oooh, yuck, raw!" reaction no matter how well I know that it is, in fact, completely cooked. The juices are not appetizing to me.

I can like a medium to medium-rare hamburger with just a tiny bit of pink in it, but things like prime rib that are supposed to be largely pink? Ugh, can't stand them. Give me pot roast any day.

However, I wish I liked alcohol more. I like the way beer tastes but I have a major aversion to wine and I cannot physically tolerate the effects of alcohol in general. Believe me, I have tried to develop a tolerance, but alcohol makes me feel terrible after a beer or two.

Shrimp makes me heave and I just don't care for sushi at all. With shrimp, it's everything about it. With sushi, it's more of a "meh" response and the texture of the raw fish if it is a variety which has raw fish on it. I just don't get what all of the excitement is about sushi - vinegared rice, raw fish, maybe some nori and sauce or wasabi. It isn't horrible, but I'm not having food-gasms over it. Sometimes I think the sushi brouhaha is just about the novelty and the exotic nature of it, because the flavor profile just isn't something I can get worked up about (and I live in Japan so I certainly have access to quality and variety).

I actually don't wish very hard that I liked these things though. They're expensive, but not liking them does limit my options.

Broccoli. I loathe it and it is everywhere. If the menu offers "vegetables" it is or includes broccoli.

Olives, I've tried them many times but still cannot stand them. I also can't stand alfredo sauce.

I forgot to add that I loathe iceberg lettuce. If I ate plastic, I imagine it would taste just like iceberg.

what a popular post! once i really thought about the question i had a longer list than i care to admit:
- yams, sweet potatoes, squash and any sweet starch
- melon
- eggs with runny yolks
- olives

don't depair, those of you who dislike sushi. my mother is japanese, and even i am not a huge raw fish eater. it has more to do with texture than anything - i do not like mushy things!

Mussels, clams, calamari...I just can't seem to stomach them. It's the texture. This is a really weird word to use to describe them, but that's how I do--bouncy.

This list is fascinating! I am so surprised at all the beer, wine, and tomato dislikes - so interesting (they're some of my favorites). I don't do salmon or quiche or frittata, and the only fish I'll eat is raw tuna. I also dislike cilantro but as others said, I have learned to tolerate it in small quantities if it's in something else. I really try not to be picky, but dislikes are clearly natural!

Eggs. I can't eat them. It's not that I kind of don't like them and could choke them down if I really wanted to... I literally can't take a bite without gagging (or worse). Even the smell of cooking eggs makes me nauseated. I really, really want to like them since they're inexpensive, easy, and can be used in so many wonderful looking recipes, but I don't see it happening any time soon. The most I've managed is some little bits of scrambled eggs in asian dishes like pad thai, and even then I try to pretend they're not there and pick out the larger bits.

Mushrooms, olives, seafood of any kind. I try and try to like seafood but no. Eggs - especially if they are runny.

Plantains. They're just too sweet for a savory meal. And on top of that they're kind of bland.

Olives. I love pickles and pickle juice but just can't get into the brine of olives.

Bitter greens. Bitter. Greens. 'nuff said.

Cocktails. Like the gin martini, stiff drink kind. And scotch. My partner loves it but when he drinks the peaty stuff I don't even want to kiss him.

I hate mushrooms (like a lot of people here it seems). I wouldn't really care except that so often they are the go-to vegetarian staple at restaurants. The mushroom ravioli or risotto veg option needs to come to an end.

Wow, I always thought I was one of the only people who disliked raw tomato! I feel better now.
I also don't care for most squash, tarragon (or any licorice-esqe food) or Campari. Really wished I could like Campari b/c I'm stuck with this huge bottle of the stuff...

Raw tomatoes, eggs, sushi, wine. Raw tomatoes smell/taste like raw pumpkin to me, eggs are just a disgusting concept, sushi has awful texture and horrible flavor, and wine is so SOUR. And yet they are all so popular!

Actually, I can't do bitter things. I don't like overly sweet either, but bitter bugs me, so the fancy olives are out (though I did try, again, the green with the red center? and no. Black olives are lovely). Cilantro is aggravating, especially since I do like jarred salsa (but not fresh).

Also, I will second the allegedly "cooked" beef. I can't even look at someone while they eat meat that still has blood dripping from it. WTF is wrong with these people!? IT TASTES LIKE BLOOD. What is appealing about that? But if I liked it, I would be picked on far less.

I will say that I am trying more foods now, for some reason. I recently developed a lust for garlic, and mildly spicy things like pepper cheese. We're planning to try a Pakistani restaurant some day for lunch, and I'm actually looking forward to it. You never know where your next favorite food will come from!

Scotch! I wish I liked scotch cause who doesn't look cool with a glass of it?

Food, I wish I liked uncooked tomatoes and onion (on a burger or a salad) instead of picking them off still. I'm one of the 50ish% of people that cilantro tastes horrid, so I wish it tasted good to me. Oh, sushi too. Rolls I can do but regular raw fish sushi, I hate the taste.

I can't stand zucchini and yellow squash but I don't wish I liked them more.

I do wish I liked peaches more. I just don't like the musky smell/taste. Makes summers in Texas tough.

i absolutely cannot eat peanut butter. peanuts, yes. peanut butter makes me yak. i think it's a textural thing. i wish i liked it because there seem to be so many delicious looking desserts out there.

i'm also not a huge fan of chocolate (mostly cake, ice cream, and other desserts). i want to love it. i really do. then people would stop saying i'm such an odd female to not like chocolate.

I positively cannot stand anchovies, sardines, and licorice (including heavily anise flavored things). Also eel, especially in sushi.

I've tried, but can't even stand anchovies and sardines in pasta sauces. Just ew. I wish I did, because there are some amazing sounding dishes...but they have anchovies or sardines and that's a deal breaker for me.

I'm not a fan of shrimp, but it's not inedible for me.

I am surprised by the tomato-phobes.

I hated raw tomatoes forever. I'd eat pasta sauce, ketchup, salsa, etc. but not big chunks in salads or anything. Thought I was alone.

Then, one day (about three or four years ago), I saw an ensalada caprese and I thought "S**t, that looks DANK!" (a.k.a: that looks delicious). So I dug in and I was hooked. I believe I ate that life-changing combination of tomato, mozzarella, basil, olive oil and sea salt every night for a week straight. All my tomato aversions disappeared and now I am a regular participant in tomato eating.

I've never gotten over my hatred of: mushrooms. Someone said it - slimy dirt! Onions - unless they're small diced and in something. No big chunks of onion (like on a burger or something, gross!!!). Beets and peppers are bitter - almost taste like cleaning solution to me! I'll eat peppers in stuff when the pepper flavor isn't the focus (like chili).

I found that once I started preparing my own foods they were more appealing. Like: Brussels sprouts are one of my favorite things these days b/c I roast the crap out of them with EVOO, S&P - they get all crusty and brown! Same with asparagus. I never would have eaten these if someone gave them to me steamed plain but doing it my own way has opened doors.

Wishing I could love seafood. I live on the South Shore of Boston so there's plenty of fresh fish...and yet I don't like it. Such a shame! It really puts a damper on being able to have a lobster/clam bake (which would be an excellent party).

I am really suprised, also, about how many people do not like tomatoes! Being Southern, there is nothing quite like a tomato sandwich with fresh off the vine tomatoe, white bread and mayonaise! And sweet potatoes! I can eat them like an apple (but cooked of course).

I wish I would like lamb - I've tried and it just taste too "gamey". I also wished I could like goat cheese.

Seafood, eggs (solo, in pasta/fried rice is fine), eggplant. I'm finding that if I just believe I like something and start eating it... I do enjoy it after a while. Except for seafood, eggs and eggplant. No dice there.

Gosh...my list is long but here goes: Seafood/shellfish, olives, most squash, CUCUMBERS!!!, mushrooms, eggplant, brussels sprouts, pumpkin (raw, anyway...smell makes me gag), pickles, okra, liver, and I can't stand lettuce when it's mixed with hot meat. (As in, on a hamburger, or in a taco...blechh!)
