Weekend Report: The Ice Cream Maker is Loose!

2008_05_05-IceCream.jpgWatch out! The ice cream maker has been liberated from its winter deep freeze, and it came out swinging with not one but two projects this weekend. The first? Homegrown mint ice cream with chunks of chocolate sandwich cookies...

2008_05_05-IceCream2.jpgYes, that's right - we made mint ice cream with that mint run wild we helped pull up. It seemed like a noble purpose for it.

Then, instead of the usual dark chocolate flakes we crumbled Newman's Own mint chocolate sandwich cookies into the ice cream base as it finished freezing. We didn't cook the egg yolks quite right so this wasn't as creamy as it should have been, but frankly that didn't stop friends and family from eating it all up.

Our other project was a frozen yogurt. We have had some unpleasant experiences with homemade frozen yogurt but we have a new secret ingredient that really helped this batch. We'll give you the recipe for that shortly.

Recipe: Mango Ginger Frozen Yogurt

Until then, here's the original recipe for mint ice cream we ran last year. Sweet and fragrant, it's much more delicate and delicious than commercial mint ice cream.

This brings up an interesting conversation: what ice cream maker should I buy?

Is the KitchenAid stand-mixer ice cream maker attachment worth buying?

Also, can I make gelato in an ice cream maker... And how?

rizzuhjj,
I have the KitchenAid attachment and love it. I store it in the freezer and it takes up less room than an entirely separate appliance. Amazon usually has good deals on them...

Anyone have a recipe for ginger/pear (or any other fruit) ice cream? Not too sweet? I know, I should be able to make ice cream without a recipe, but I've never done it before - going to give my roommate's ice cream maker a try for the stepmom's bday.

Also, seconding the gelato quesiton.

cweingarten, I was about to ask the same thing. Does anyone have an ice-cream maker recommendation that doesn't necessitate buying an entire Kitchen-Aid mixer set-up?

That's great. We have a kitchen-aid stand mixer and we never use it. My wife is going to be so happy.

Doppelganger -- my roommate loves her cuisinart ice cream maker, and I love the ice cream she makes with it.

Thanks, mjoe! Between your rec and the recent post on the Cuisinart, I've put in a call to my local Williams-Sonoma and I'm picking up my ice cream maker (with extra freezer bowl -- whee!) this weekend.

Elizabeth P - How does that KitchenAid attachment work? (My family already has the mixer.)
