Weekend Meditation: Sweet Inspiration

2009_04_26-kitchlemon.jpgWhat's inspiring your kitchen this week? Maybe you've bought something new you that can't wait to try out or you've noticed it's spring and the asparagus, peas, ramps and morels are calling to you. Perhaps it's the fact that you temporarily lost your mind and invited eight people to dinner. Maybe it's all three! My top inspirations, including a really fun kitchen video, after the jump.

My Five Top Kitchen Inspirations for This Week:

2009_04_26-emanel.jpgNew Tools. I finally broke down and ordered a new set of utensils last week and they just arrived yesterday. I love them. I love their creamy color, the oval shape of the ladles (which come in two sizes!) and the beautiful perforation pattern on the skimmer and spoon. They make me want to have friends over for soup just so I can use one of the ladles. Or whip up a batch of strawberry jam so I can check out the skimmer. They're strong and sturdy and pretty and I plan to have them forever.

2009_04_26-jamievid.jpgCooking Video from Jamie and Matt. This wonderful short video was made for Valentine's Day, but I don't recommend waiting until next year to watch it. From the sweet intro to the lovely table setting in the end, this video makes me smile. i especially love the oranges turning into orange juice!

2009_04_26-spring.jpgMAV's Everyday Living as Art flickr set. A bowl of tea on a wooden table, eggs shells in the sink, the leftover crumbs from a nibbled on treat...each of these photos captures the simplicity of our everyday experiences in a way that I find soothing and inspiring. Scrolling through these photos always makes me want to go into my own kitchen and do something. Nothing huge and ambitious, just something simple like pouring a cup of tea and putting a handful of cookies on a little plate.

The Kitchen Cure. I'm not doing the Cure this year but I am following along and finding that I'm quite influenced by it. Just in my everyday puttering about and cleaning I've already de-cluttered a pots-and-pans cupboard and tossed a few old spices. My weekend project is to make some soup (see utensil post above) to use up most of my freezer stash of stock and veg and parmesan rinds. I'm still not sure what to do with that pesky lid storage problem.

Spring. It almost goes without saying that whatever season it is, it's influencing my kitchen. Tomorrow is farmer's market day and I'll be on the look out for asparagus, which should be cheap and plentiful, fava beans and some green garlic. And also, hopefully, some surprises and new discoveries.

What is influencing and inspiring your kitchen this week? Please share it with us!

I'm inspired in a roundabout way. I'm staring down the most stressful week I've had in a long time--meetings, evaluations, house guests, husband starting a new job, a race--and while the sensible part of me says it would make the most sense to order a salad for dinner, the insightful part of me knows that an hour in the kitchen is like therapy.

Yesterday, I baked a ham, made potato salad and had a bunch of friends over. Two arrived around noon, another an hour later. They needed to leave around five and another wave of folks came in. It was glorious to see and cook for that many. Especially making ricotta fritters. Yum.

I feel so much more myself after an entire day in the kitchen. It's like being back in my own home after a long, stressful trip.

I'm inspired by my newly cleaned and organized kitchen! I was about a week behind on my cure tasks but managed to catch up this weekend. It felt great to clean out my fridge, countertops, cupboards and pantry. I still need to plan out our meals for the week but the fresh slate that is a clean and organized kitchen makes me look forward to it all the more.

i'm inspired by the heat. it suddenly turned 90 degrees in DC. clearly, the only cure for this is multiple outdoor picnics and a huge batch of cucumber yogurt soup (large container lowfat plain yogurt, plus 2 peeled cukes, dill [or whatever other good fresh herbs around], salt, and pepper, and a splash of good olive oil in the blender). perfect for sipping out of a mug, straight out of the fridge.

I bought two meyer lemons, which I'd never had before. Not enough to bake with, but one lemon made me and my sweetie some mean sidecars. And the other one will make some more sidecars.

I got some armenian cucumber plants at the farmer's market to plant on the trellis that held snap peas last winter. Apparently, they like lots of sun--yay!
