2008_08_24-cheese2.jpgah, pleasure. That luscious tomato sandwich, a seasonal delight to be experienced right now at the height of tomato season. Peaches and vanilla ice cream, with a light sprinkling of chopped fresh basil. Soon, when autumn arrives, a crisp, satisfying bite of an apple or the salty/thyme golden skin of a well-roasted chicken dissolving beneath your tongue. And at anytime, anywhere, anything baked up fresh and golden and straight from the oven.

Eating can be such a delicious pleasure, and so simple and immediate. But pleasure, like all things, is fleeting so all the more reason to truly experience it while it is in full-bloom, right there in your mouth. And if you love to eat, then you can anticipate being happy at least three times a day, every day of the week. Not a bad way to live this life.

Because they take place in the mundane world, it's sometimes hard to remember to notice pleasure and to give it the weight of attention, letting it register and take it's place. Even a stick of gum or a lemon drop or a cool glass of water when your thirsty are worthy of appreciation. What flavor or texture has woken you up? What pleasures are there here?

Pictured above: cheese plate from Cav Wine Bar in San Francisco. Green apple with honey, a delicious hard cheese (maybe Abbaye de Belloc?) with figs and currants, guava jelly, Lively Run Cayuga Blue with sweet-spiced walnuts, quince paste, Brillat Savarin with brandy soaked cherries. Total cost: $20 and worth every penny.

Before I turned on the computer this morning, I awoke, went downstairs toasted an onion bagel, spread it with cream cheese, then added a slice of cheddar. A steaming cup of coffee with cream, and a couple spoons of sugar. I sat in the courtyard garden and had one of the best starts to a morning I can remember in a long time. I chose this way today because I have been rushed and harried for the last couple of weeks, and this little "break-fast" allowed me to slow down, and breathe in this life. I can now face and respond to what is next in a whole hearted way.

Thanks for the affirmation of my choices, and thanks for always bringing me back each weekend to something more than just a bunch of "stuff".

This is a good reminder for me right now. Lately, I've been eating for survival (and failing at that). I think it's time to slow down and enjoy life--and the foods in it--a little more.
