It's a holiday weekend for a lot people here in the states. Memorial Day, a day in which we honor those who have died defending our country. But it's also barbecues and picnics and planting a garden. It's opening up the summer cottage or cleaning out a closet in search of white shoes.
At the market you'll find strawberries and asparagus, little lettuces and radishes, peas and scallions. What foods say Memorial Day to you? Seven Layer Salad? Potato salad? Something on the grill? Chocolate sheet cake with vanilla frosting? Brownies? This weekend I'm going to try Eton Mess, a kind of a mashed up strawberry shaum torte with whipped cream, sugared strawberries and crumbled meringues. I'll let you know how it goes.
And what makes a day--any day--memorable? What do you want to remember and honor? What can you pack in your picnic basket that helps bring such things to your life and the lives of those around you?

My family always used to have a Bastille Day Party (July 14) because the Fourth of July weekend was always so jam packed with celebrations. It was always just a good time for everyone to get together. My uncle started it before I was even born, and we still celebrate today. Usually the menu consists of his famous chili, cornbread, and the usual hamburgers and hot dogs. I hope to keep the tradition alive with a few tweaks whenever I get my own job/apartment somewhere.

Making dinner with my best friend while our husbands and friends play bocce on the grass. Enjoying said dinner outside in the late evening Seattle sun, the maple leaves gently shaking in the breeze.
