You've heard of Facebook and LinkedIn, but what about BakeSpace, GroupRecipes, and Open Source Food?
Invitations to social networking sites geared toward cooks and food lovers appear in our in-box almost daily. Do you belong to a foodie social networking site? What do think about them?
These kinds of networking sites offer a cyber-home for food lovers. They're places where we can gather, share recipes, and indulge in foodie conversations without the need to censor our enthusiasm. We like the thread of support and encouragement that runs through these communities.
There's also an immediacy to these sites that is pretty incredible. Post a question about separating eggs, and you'll get a dozen responses by the time you walk to the fridge and back.
The downside is that there's no filter. Advice can sometimes be contradictory, and you're on your own to determine if smashing eggs with a sledgehammer is ill advised.
We find that the same is true of the recipes. There are gems, to be sure. But finding them takes a fair amount of sifting through pages of uninteresting or irrelevant recipes.
What experiences have you had with foodie social networking sites?

I don't know if it is for social networking per se but http://www.lthforum.com/bb/index.php is quite a busy culinary chat site.

Check out http://www.biteclub.com it's a networking website centered on the food and drink culture, so restaurant industry insiders and foodies alike are welcome.

I joined grouprecipes when I received an email invitation over a year ago. Anyway, I was excited in the beginning, then decided that the site was very user-UNfriendly. It takes forever to load the pages, when I did a search for pork recipes, the same recipe came up about twenty times in a row, all submitted by different members. It was just too busy for me; I guess I prefer something more simple, or more organized.
I check in every once in a while, but I don't generally like websites with user-posted recipes. As you say, there's no filter, and too many recipes don't seem to be tested at all, or include ingredients like canned soup and bottled dressing.
This is not to say I wouldn't enjoy a food-centered social networking site, just that grouprecipes wasn't for me...

I'm a member of group recipes and open source...I've had similar mixed experiences with both....currently I'm experimenting with foodbuzz.com Seems to be similar yet there is a bit more variety....lots of foodie blogs are "featured members" of foodbuzz which is how I found them...so far, so good.

In terms of foodie fun (outside of this site) I stick to posting photos & commenting on Flickr.

Hi Emma,
I don't mean to change the subject, but is there any chance you might share the recipe for those peanut butter cookies in the photo? I've been drooling over them since yesterday! :)

Bakespace has been my favorite place for the past 6 months now. It's become my home away from home. I've met so many people (online and in person) through bakespace and I have learned so much from them. Not only have they helped me out with cooking questions but they have become a family. I think Bakespace is different from all these other places b/c even though these are user posted recipes you can contact that person and ask questions. They also have a mentor program which no other site has. Also, I've been on key ingredient and I don't find it to be as user friendly as bakespace. OH and get this...Bakespace's founder/moderator/administrator is also a member who we interact with every day. I don't think any other site is like that either. I love bakespace...can't you tell? LOL

BakeSpace...I've been there for a year now... Why?...
It's user friendly...and getting moreso every day with the new updates.
If members have suggestions, they are listened to and often acted on...
The thing I like most about the recipe base is the ability to find recipes that will impress your 4 year old, as well as recipes that will impress your new friend, the Chef with 40 years experience.... to find dinner on the table in half an hour or something to impress 30 guests from appy's to dessert...
The family atmosphere is oddly refreshing...it's like cooking with your sister or your Mom every day.
If you want to tackle a new technique, there are people who will help...
If you have never cooked except from a can, there is hope... and help and encouragement to move into measured recipes.
Or, if your family has downsized to the point that leftovers threaten your life...ask others with the same problem how they downsized their favorites without losing flavor...
In other words, the draw of BakeSpace is the diversity of people, each with a level of skills, or lack thereof...gladly helping other cooks/bakers reach a new level of achievement.
And all this is done with the feel of friends in your home, sipping a cuppa, sharing the experience.
Come say hi... Qui (Pat)

I've been a part of BakeSpace for just about 6 months. It is the ABSOLUTE BEST site for foodies. They have just revamped the entire site and I really didn't think they could make it any better than it was, but dang if they didn't. It is such a friendly site and I've met so many great folks there. Help is always just a few keystrokes away with the new mentor program, so if a kitchen disaster or just a simple question about why your cheesecake cracks comes up there's an expert ready with the answer. Check it out it's truly a place for anyone interested in great recipes, plenty of knowledge, and above all a group of people that can understand and not think you're totally nuts when you get so excited about that cruddy old cookbook you found at a garage sale, or just exactly how you can actually fall in love with a KitchenAid mixer. Yes I love mine to pieces!

I have belonged to Gather, Taste Of Home and grouprecipes before coming to BakeSpace, nothing else compared to this place. It is so friendly, the other people who post on there and the administration. I know of no other site where I could expect to be nurtured along by the site creator like I have been at BakeSpace. BakeSpace has grown so very much since I joined it years ago but I still feel a personal connection with the site creator. I was very afraid of the "new BakeSpace" but it is even better than before. As others have said, if you have a problem with anything make a suggestion and you will be heard. I have been cooking for well over 40 years and I know by looking which recipes will be good. You can find down home comfort food, gourmet recipes, healthy, kid-friendly, pet, well just about any kind of recipe you want there. It is also great to be able to offer help or receive help from other cookers and bakers. Give it a try, you will be hooked.
