Vino: Mas de Gorgonnier Rosé

rose.jpgName: Mas de Gorgonnier Rosé
Grape: Grenache, Cinsault, Carignane and Cabernet
Region: Provence, France
Price: $10.99 to $12.99

For me, Mother’s Day marks the beginning of Rosé season. Rosés are sadly misunderstood; blame blush wine from the seventies and eighties which gave pink wine a bad rap. Fortunately traditional, dry Rosés are making a comeback and they are becoming easier to find.

Surprisingly, rosé is made entirely from red grapes. The fruit and juice inside all grapes is white; wines get their color from skin contact, a process called maceration. Red wines spend a significant amount of time stewing with the skins, while rosés will hang out with the skins for a brief moment, giving them just a hint of color. Maceration also adds tannin and spice to wine.

Mas de Gorgonnier is an organic producer located in the beautiful, small, AOC of Baux-de- Provence; a region made famous by Van Gogh’s paintbrush. This rosé is widely available and a very good example of the true Provencal style: dry and clean with a little fruit. I like to say that it gives the impression of sweetness without being sweet. A good dry rosé will pair with nearly anything: brunch, barbecue, Vietnamese, you name it. Serve chilled.

Stores: Beacon Wine and Spirits $10.99(between 74th and 75th Street), Appellation Wines and Spirits $12.99 (156 10th Avenue between 19h and 20th Street), Astor Wines $12.99 (399 Lafayette at 4th Street), Chambers Street Wines $12.99 (160 Chambers Street between Greenwich and W. Broadway)
