Know any otherwise vegetarians who can't help themselves when it comes to bacon? Or any who crave it but make do with veggie versions? What is it about this cured meat that keeps so many people on the fence?
I can't say for sure, but as a vegetarian, I'll admit it's the only meat I've ever missed.
The rise of all things pork in the past few years has only added to this phenomenon. Even a vegetarian can't swing a block of tofu without hitting some new, outrageous use of bacon (see bacon chocolate).
And how many times have you heard that everything is better with bacon? Probably a lot. I'm certainly not going to argue with that claim, but it can make it awfully hard to stay away from the stuff if you're a recovering bacon lover.
I've yet to find a vegetarian version that's worth eating, but I'm intrigued by The Edibility Exam's recipe that uses strips of eggplant seasoned with Bacon Salt. That one's going right on the to-cook list.

Any flexitarians out there who indulge in a little bacon now and then? Anyone have any other vegetarian bacon recipes? We'd love to hear about them.

I do know people who don't eat pork except for bacon but not any vegetarians who do that. My vegan husband sometimes misses salmon though (I get fake salmon and Chinatown for him and he loves it). I've always thought bacon looked gross. And I've never ever missed any meat. But I've also have never had most meats.

Bacon is the one kind of meat which I truly miss. But, luckily morningstar bacon is a reasonable substitute. It doesn't have the correct texture but the flavor is correct. Which makes me wonder what they're putting in there . . .

The only meat I might possibly miss eating is seafood. Never used bacon that much prior to becoming a vegetarian.
Juice: I think I'll check out the morinngstar bacon, although I generally tend to have bad luck with meat substitutes.

I am not a vegetarian, but I was for many years. It was strange because I found myself missing the most unhealthy, fattiest types of meat during that time: salami, bacon, gristle, gravy...you get the point. Now I'm no longer vegetarian but I don't really crave these items. Weird, huh?

My favorite sandwich is a BLT---crisp bacon, lettuce and tomato---on toasted white bread (with a lot of tomatoes and loaded with mayonnaise). I don't eat it very often, but boy-oh-boy, nothing satisfies like a BLT.

I'm no longer vegetarian, but I still keep my meat intake down -- mostly seafood or chicken once or twice a week. I really dislike pork except for -- you guessed it! -- bacon. I don't know what it is, but crispy, juicy, salty bacon is one of the best, most indulgence-worthy foods I can imagine. I regulate my consumption of it by only allowing myself to eat it in restaurants. Since I go out to breakfast only a few times a year, it keeps my bacon addiction to a metabolism- and heart-friendly treat status.

I think it's the salt and smoke that we miss, the kind of full flavored satisfaction it brings. I cope with smoked tofu on TLT's :)... adding liquid smoke to split pea soup and other dishes that would have used bacon or ham, and by using chipotle puree in eggs and such. There is even smoked salt on the market, which I have yet to try but have heard is bacon-esque.

As a vegetarian, I've never missed any meat, including bacon (although I have known someone who called themselves a veg and ate bacon). Early on, I missed tuna fish salad sandwiches, but that's about it. I don't really miss them now.
I've always liked Fakin Bacon. I'm not sure if it's still around--haven't had it in years. You could make a great veggie BLT with it.

FromTheFuture: Doesn't eating meat once a year mess with your body? I remember my first attempt at vegetarianism back in college. One whole year without meat and then, during finals week, I chowed down two big macs (brought to my dorm room by my roomate). I was soooo sick the next morning. I don't know how I got through the final exam I had that day.

My sister did this for years, consciously... she was vegetarian for moral reasons, but loved bacon, so she evetually decided to just enjoy bacon and be done with it. She even invented her own version of vegetarianism: ovo-lacto-prosciutto-vegetarianism.

Thank the lord, I thought it was just me. I've been vegetarian for 3 years, and I just can't be near bacon. Too sad, so yummy. The closest I've gotten to bacony was baked seitan marinated in onion gravy and broiled til it's crispy. There's something about the salt and the crispy/melty texture of bacon that just makes my mouth go slack thinking about it.
I've been told if you don't eat something for long enough, you'll stop craving it. Not true.

Surely I'm not the only one who finds the phrasing a little nonsensical? Those who eat bacon and no other forms of meat should be described as omnivores, not vegetarians.
I never missed bacon - I found all varieties too salty and fatty. I did miss shrimp for a while, but there are marvelous Asian-style faux shrimp out there, and local Vietnamese vegetarian restaurants do incredible things with them.

Uhh, justveggingout, I guarantee you it was the 2 Big Macs that caused your suffering and not the meat eating in and of itself. I've heard of a lot of vegetarians having upset stomach upon eating meat again, but if you're sensible/start slowly you can minimize discomfort. I was veg for 7 years and had no problem transitioning "back in" (though I can't even imagine what one Big Mac would do to my omnivorous stomach).

Yes. Smart Bacon BLT's are my go-to comfort food. But I don't miss real bacon. Just the idea of it. Real bacon makes me think of pigs. And pigs are apparently smarter than dogs.

Stiletto-- I think it's meant to be funny. If it said "I'm an omnivore cause bacon is the only kind of meat I eat, so I can't call myself a vegetarian" I certainly wouldn't find it clever or funny.
When I was vegetarian, bacon and Italian sausage were my weaknesses, so I'd eat a leetle tiny bite of those once in a blue moon (oh, so I guess I was never vegetarian). But then when I decided to start eating meat again (more than a bite once in a blue moon I mean) the first thing I ate? VENISON! Interesting choice... don't think I'd eaten it before, never eaten it since.

Ha! That's exactly what my friend said when she decided to become vegetarian, or flexitarian, rather. She can easily shake her head at chicken, but bacon is just one of those meats you crave. That, and the occasional really good steak.

That shirt is fantastic! When my sister jumped off the vegetarian wagon, after about 12 years, her first food was bacon.
Now she eats plenty of meat, and our oldest sister is vegetarian. I'm on a high salt, high protein diet, so I won't ever be giving up bacon, or corned beef, or steak, etc. etc.
One of my favorite shirts says meat is murder: tasty, tasty murder. Not PC, but true.

Gotta get that tee shirt. One of my favorite vendors at my local farmers market here in NYC is a guy that sells pork. He raises and slaughters the pigs himself, and makes the bacon...oh so good! For valentines day, he gave me a canvas bag that says "I Love You Bacon". I always have a package or two of his bacon in the freezer. If you're gonna eat this stuff, eat the best.

I think I'm the only person on the planet who never liked bacon. I'll eat the fake stuff, and I'll cook the real stuff for my boyfriend. Even as a kid I didn't like eating bacon, though I loved the smell of it cooking, I think maybe because it also signified tastier things would also be present, like pancakes. Now I don't really like the smell, either, and would much rather eat some nuts for protein than waste money and packaging on fake bacon.

I thought it was just me too! 13 years, 13 years nothing but a wonderful vegetarian life then it all ended with peperoni! Now I wonder how I did it before, I am such an omnivore now, but I think one day I'll go back and give up my bad meat eating ways. I did feel better then, not as tired.
