Try This: Newspapers as Placemats

2008_05_09-Newspaper.jpgOver at AT:LA, Abby posted 20 household uses for newspaper besides just tossing it in the recycling bin. Then, last night, we saw a food-related use that we thought we'd pass on to the Kitchn readers...

These are single sheets of newspaper (even more interesting if they're foreign) used as placemats. True, we also love pretty linens, but for any Cure takers planning a party who want to do something cheap and different, we thought this was a fun idea.

You could also write guests' names on the sheets of paper for casual "place cards."

i love looking at foreign papers when i travel -- this is such a good idea for putting them to use. just bring back the pretty ones (arts sections?), and cut & laminate them. nice!
(or i guess just go to chinatown/a foreign newsstand -- but i like the idea of creating a memento from a trip)

Newspaper has become highly underrated for picking up dog poo.

Bags seem to be the way to go these days. But there is newspaper blowing around all over the place and clogging up foyers in a home or office near you.

In Chicago we have a paper called the Red Eye. In my opinion, it's only value is as a dog poo picker-upper.

Newspapers are getting kinda rare, at least where I am. They go a long way, though. I use them under the occasional at-my-desk, paper-wrapped breakfast burrito to sop up the drips.

Martybird, that was exactly my first thought. However, when eating an especially messy meal, such as crabs (yum!) a ton of newspapers is a godsend. Just don't put them over a white table.

I mainly donated newpaper to Boy scouts, but I do save some for cleaning windows, but mainly for my garden. I put them( sheets) around new planted plants vegetables to flowers. This helps keep the weeds way down and it will break down in soil. I read this many years ago and keep weeding down, does not hurt plant at all.
