Travel Inspiration: Buy Local Food Magazines & Cookbooks

2009_07_21-Magazines.jpgOne of my favorite things to do when traveling, especially internationally, is go to a bookstore or newsstand and hunt out local food magazines. It's a great way to find some local or regional recipes, and also to perhaps pick up some magazines that aren't as widely available in the States. Do you do this when you travel?

When I was in Kenya last winter, for instance, I picked up a local Nairobi food magazine, plus a charity cookbook, and an Australian Women's Weekly with some fabulous recipes and photos. It was a great way to bring back some inspiration for my own cooking and kitchen from my travels.

What about you? Do you look for local food publications when you travel, and do you have any particularly good finds?

During my trip to New Zealand last November, I purchased a number of their food and wine magazines, which were full of unique and new summer recipes that I'm finally now able to utilize. Seeing Christmas recipes geared for hot weather and beach-picnics was a real treat for me.

An unexpected surprise were the conversion tables in the back of one of the magazines which took some of the work out of the math.

Yes! While backpacking recently, I picked up way too many cookbooks and local food mags along the way. My back was cursing me during the trip, but of course it was all worth it once I returned home. :)
