Cooking Escapes: Taking Cooking Classes on Vacation?

2008_08_22-VacationCooking.jpgVisiting the museums and taking in the local restaurant scene are pretty standard items on a vacation itinerary. But what about signing up for a cooking class?

Well, sure! Why not?!

A friend of ours just came back from Paris (lucky dog!) and can't stop talking about two cooking classes she took while there. They were both in French (and our friend doesn't speak French). She and her mother were the only Americans there. And she says they were the most fun she's had on vacation in years.

We think that taking a cooking vacation is a great idea. Trying a new cuisine at a local restaurant while on vacation is one experience, but actually learning how to make it is entirely different.

Plus, this is the kind of vacation souvenir we like--one that doesn't take up space in our carry-on and that we get to enjoy over and over again!

Would you take a cooking class on vacation?

A couple of years ago I did a culinary tour through India. The highlight was a full day spent with just me, my husband and an expert on local cuisine. We cooked lunch and dinner and did a trip to the market. It was better than any cooking class I've ever taken because it was completely focused on what we wanted to do. We did other smaller cooking classes (mostly those offered free by the hotels) and did tours of spice plantations, tea plantations, markets, fishing villages, etc. Lots of fun!

I took a cooking class in Chiang Mai, Thailand when I was there in 2003. It was LOTS of fun, very hands-on, totally delicious and I still have my recipe book with those we cooked and others from the same chef. I would absolutely do it again and am considering cooking vacations in my future.

Maybe if I was going some where really exotic or where I had zero experience cooking food from but as it is now, I spend at least 40 hours a week cooking/developing recipes and look forward to vacation as a time away from cooking.

I took a fabulous cooking class while on vacation in Morocco last year. It was the best part of the trip!

I would take a culinary vacation over a lot of others (including beaches) any day!

I have taken some lovely hands-on cooking classes in Hoi An (Vietnam) and Bangkok, and I absolutely loved it. The food was wonderful, and it was a great learning experience to go to the market with an experienced local guide. I'd definitely do it again :)

Like Emily, I too took a class in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Our instructor offered the class out of her home and a motley group of 9 international tourists all crowded in her carport to learn the secrets of Thai cooking. Our instructor was smart, funny, and taught us so much. We each got a little recipe book she'd published herself and we even took a field trip (between courses) to the local market to learn about different ingredients and what to do with them. I swear the freshest, most flavorful Thai food I've ever eaten I prepared myself! This all-day cooking class was certainly a highlight of that trip.
