I had been wanting to put some sort of writing board in the kitchen for a while, but I was hesitant because I don't have a lot of wall space, and I didn't want too much clutter on the walls or fridge. I was still rather reluctant even after I bought this cheap little board, because it wasn't so cute, and I wasn't sure if I would end up using it after all.
Well, after all that reluctance, I've been so happy with this board. Here are the two ways I've been using it:
• Fridge and freezer reminder. When we have leftovers or ingredients that should be used up soon, my husband or I put a note on this board and it helps us remember the food that is in the fridge before we open something new.
• Dinner menu rundown. I find it really helpful to jot down the menu on the board while cooking a big dinner. Sometimes I'll forget a detail or two, or get caught up in one thing for too long. It's helpful to turn around and orient myself by glancing at the whole menu, written down in one place. And it's very satisfying to cross things off as I finish them!
Do you have a writeboard of some kind in your kitchen? Is it useful? If so, how do you find yourself using it?

I use a dry erase board to keep a running grocery list - when I am in the kitchen and realize that I have run out of something I write it down so I remember when I'm headed to the grocery store

Our kitchen has a dry erase board with our running grocery list, drug store list, and household to-do list. It is completely indispensable.

My husband practices on the left side of the dry erase board:

The right side is the grocery list.
We are also starting to tally up our "cookies owed" on the board. He does me a lot of little favors, so I owe him a cookie every time.

We have one of those cool peel-and-stick whiteboards on the side of our fridge...we use it for our son's weekly spelling words and a to-do list. Sometimes we plan meals on it, too.

I have a very cool tin chalkboard up. Because it's metal I can magnet up the grocery list, coupons, and notes. And it's a lifesaver for reminding me (in the red chalk) to do things like soak beans tonight so they're ready for dinner tomorrow!

We've got a small dry-erase board on the freezer, with a list of the items and quantities of things we need to eat - like clams or salmon or venison, or that b.o.g.o. chicken. We also have a larger whiteboard on the fridge, where we've created a weekly schedule using day of the week magnets. This is where I set the menu for the week, so we know what to get at the grocery store on Monday nights. It works so well for us that we rarely have to make more than one trip to the market each week!

yup, i have one on my fridge for groceries and notes. all my appliances are stainless steel and i found a whiteboard at target that is also stainless steel, so it looks pretty spiffy and not at all intrusive :)

Nope. (My iPhone does all that--and comes to the store with me, and reminds me when we're running low on something, and has multiple preplanned menus stored in it, and allows me to tweak them during downtimes when I'm out and about...)

I use a dry erase marker on my bathroom mirror to remind me of things. It's amazing how many times I'm brushing my teeth and think of something and feel the need to write it down right away. Right now it also serves as my grocery list...

My roommate and I have one as well. It's used to remind us to eat items about to spoil (thus saving us money) and to plan meals (helps me eat healthier). I also use it to make a shopping list.

My roommates and I have one on the fridge and it's the best thing we bought for our apt! We use it for everything from to keep track of how much money (for groceries, etc) we owe each other to coordinating "dog stuff" (when was he last out/fed/bathed), to (always polite) letters reminding each other to wash one's dishes. Sometimes, the board becomes our main outlet of communication during particularly busy weeks. The one thing we don't use it for is grocery lists - you can't carry the board with you to the supermarket (everything will get erased in your bag on the way...)

I recently bought one of these for the side of the fridge and I love it. I have 3 lists on it (1) what's in the freezer (2) what's in the fridge and (3) things I want to cook soon.
#3 currently has bread pudding and pecan pie listed. And squash soup.
It really helps me keep track of things when I'm busy!

I do keep lists like this, but I write them on scrap paper or the back of an envelope and they get stuck to the fridge with cute magnets. It's so useful to have a list of food that's in the fridge/freezer, somehow you can never see what's in there properly!

I've been wanting to put up a large chalkboard (or paint with chalkboard paint) for putting up the dinner menu just because it's cute and we often have elaborate meals.
Alas, that and the wood burning stove will have to wait until we move to a place with a bigger kitchen...

That sounds like a really good idea. I will need to get a wall-mounted board instead, though - the sexual innuendo magnetic poetry is already well-established on the fridge real estate...

For those with limited wall space, the inside of a cupboard door can also be used.

I didn't read the comments, so sorry if this was already suggested.
I *thought* you were going to say that you not only plan your meals on there, but you keep your grocery list, too. And then you'd take a picture of it on your camera phone to have your list and your meals with you when you shop.
I had never thought of that before until I saw the picture of your white board. Thanks for the idea, even if that's not what you meant!
