Seasonal Note: Try Fresh Strawberries in Frozen Margaritas

2008_06_16-Strawberries.jpgMaybe Monday morning is a little early to be talking about margaritas, but what the heck. We made frozen margaritas last weekend, and while the margarita is not usually our cocktail of choice, these were pretty fabulous. Our favorite variation was with fresh strawberries...

Most of the recipes for frozen margaritas that we've found call for frozen strawberries to replace some of the ice cubes. Others call for commercial strawberry puree - sweetened and flavored.

But we just want to put in a good word for fresh strawberries - so cheap and plentiful right now at the markets. Even the big, pillowy California strawberries are good in margaritas; their tiny crunchy seeds and sweet freshness take the tired old frozen margarita out of restaurant cliché and put it squarely back in our drink rotation.

To make a frozen margarita with strawberries, just add a few cups of ice and a quart or so of fresh strawberries to our margarita recipe below, and whiz in batches in the blender. Happy slurping!

These look great! However, since this blog is read (inter)nationally, a "Seasonal Note" should be made about the title of this entry - while strawberries may be in season in CA, they are not quite in many other parts of the nation. My impression is that this post was at least implicitly encouraging taking advantage of fresh, locally grown produce - which is great. However, the geographic diversity of your readers should be kept in mind, so you aren't promoting everyone to run to their "local" megastore and pick up strawberries flown/driven far enough to burn up a whole lot of oil and deplete all their flavor.

How about: "Hey CA - Seasonal Note:". I'll be excited for NY's seasonal note later this summer - say what you will about NJ, their strawberries are great.

hang my preachy head low...I somehow managed to formulate this whole argument while neglecting to realize what month it was - sad, but that busy cooped up at work. At least I have the Ktchn to remind me what's going on outside! Apologies for my oversight - now an all around great post.

Let's all enjoy strawberries!

I like my margaritas with frozen strawberries instead of ice. But not pre-packaged frozen ones, I will go to the Farmer's Market and buy a flat of strawberries if I am having a party - they get cut up and stuck in the freezer until right before the party when I can toss 'em in the blender. I'd rather freeze my good berries and not have to worry about adding ice.
